And suddenly there he was, this tall, quiet boy in a blue and
white shirt . . . I'll always remember the first time I saw him.
Donna is on a boat. She is going to Spain with her
family for a holiday. On the boat she sees Mark, a tall,
good-looking boy. But Mark is very shy and he doesn't
talk to her on the boat. Who will help them to meet?
Will they be together?
A meeting will not be successful unless someone has put some effort into its planning. Most
meetings are undermanaged. If any other business activity were as poorly managed as the
average meeting, those responsible would have their careers seriously abbreviated.
The effectiveness, productivity, and ultimate success of a meeting is directly related to the
amount of planning. Someone must take management responsibility seriously.
This paper introduces the four stages of meeting management: planning, preparation, process
management, and follow-up.
The meeting is a form for agencies and units to discuss, evaluate, summarize content, issues or events under the chairmanship of the leadership.
Meetings are necessary to coordinate individual efforts, collaborate on joint projects, garner support for ideas, solve problems collectively
Meetings are a gathering of two or more persons to collectively accomplish what one person cannot.

This book was first written following the tsunami in December 2004.
The massive and sudden arrival of volunteers and non-government
organisations into affected areas needed to link closely with local
and government agencies and a „tsunami‟ of meetings was set up.
Some meetings had unclear objectives, others were uncertain of the
participant list or who should initiate the assembly; yet others were
hampered by the damaged infrastructure and communicating

“If I didn’t have to go to meetings, I’d like my job a lot more.”
It’s a remark I’ve heard from many of the leaders I’ve
worked with over the years. I used to think that it was
understandable—even humorous—but I’ve come to the conclusion
that it’s actually a sad comment on the state of our

Automatic summarization evaluation is critical to the development of summarization systems. While ROUGE has been shown to correlate well with human evaluation for content match in text summarization, there are many characteristics in multiparty meeting domain, which may pose potential problems to ROUGE. In this paper, we carefully examine how well the ROUGE scores correlate with human evaluation for extractive meeting summarization.
Most previous studies on meeting summarization have focused on extractive summarization. In this paper, we investigate if we can apply sentence compression to extractive summaries to generate abstractive summaries. We use different compression algorithms, including integer linear programming with an additional step of filler phrase detection, a noisychannel approach using Markovization formulation of grammar rules, as well as human compressed sentences.
This paper presents Archivus, a multimodal language-enabled meeting browsing and retrieval system. The prototype is in an early stage of development, and we are currently exploring the role of natural language for interacting in this relatively unfamiliar and complex domain. We briefly describe the design and implementation status of the system, and then focus on how this system is used to elicit useful data for supporting hypotheses about multimodal interaction in the domain of meeting retrieval and for developing NLP modules for this specific domain. ...
We present a user requirements study for Question Answering on meeting records that assesses the difficulty of users questions in terms of what type of knowledge is required in order to provide the correct answer. We grounded our work on the empirical analysis of elicited user queries. We found that the majority of elicited queries (around 60%) pertain to argumentative processes and outcomes.
The AMI Meeting Corpus is now publicly available, including manual annotation files generated in the NXT XML format, but lacking explicit metadata for the 171 meetings of the corpus. To increase the usability of this important resource, a representation format based on relational databases is proposed, which maximizes informativeness, simplicity and reusability of the metadata and annotations.
This paper presents the application of WordNet-based semantic relatedness measures to Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) in multi-party meetings. Different word-utterance context relatedness measures and utterance-coherence measures are defined and applied to the rescoring of N best lists. No significant improvements in terms of Word-Error-Rate (WER) are achieved compared to a large word-based ngram baseline model. We discuss our results and the relation to other work that achieved an improvement with such models for simpler tasks. ...
We present results on addressee identification in four-participants face-to-face meetings using Bayesian Network and Naive Bayes classifiers. First, we investigate how well the addressee of a dialogue act can be predicted based on gaze, utterance and conversational context features. Then, we explore whether information about meeting context can aid classifiers’ performances. Both classifiers perform the best when conversational context and utterance features are combined with speaker’s gaze information. The classifiers show little gain from information about meeting context. ...
