So vast and wonderful a construction was the Roman world, so different from our own, that we are apt to
imagine it as an arrangement far more deliberately planned, far more mechanically complete, than it appeared
to its own inhabitants.
From a cursory glance, we may carry away wholly mistaken conceptions of its thought and purpose. Thus, for
instance, the Roman Republic never assumed the definite design of conquering the world; its people had only
the vaguest conception of whither the world might extend. They merely quarrelled with their neighbors,
defeated and then annexed them....
Harrison's Internal Medicine Chapter 46. Fluid and Electrolyte Disturbances Sodium and Water
Sodium and Water: Introduction
Composition of Body Fluids Water is the most abundant constituent in the body, comprising approximately 50% of body weight in women and 60% in men. This difference is attributable to differences in the relative proportions of adipose tissue in men and women. Total body water is distributed in two major compartments: 55–75% is intracellular [intracellular fluid (ICF)], and 25–45% is extracellular [extracellular fluid (ECF)].
Many more women are active today compared to when the first studies of activity in America
were conducted. However, as a group, girls and women are still less active than boys and men.
Some of this difference in activity between males and females can be explained by the
historical disparity in opportunities for females. Since 1972, when Title IX was implemented,
more females have become involved in organized sport. We have yet to discover the effects of
this increased participation on lifetime activity among females....
With the death of Sardanapalus, the great monarch of Assyria, and the taking of Nineveh, the capital city, by
the Medes, the kingdom of Assyria came to an end, and the vast domain was parcelled out among the conquerors. At the time of the catastrophe, the district of Babylonia, with its capital city Babylon, was ruled as
a dependent satrapy of Assyria by Nabopolassar.
Excess abdominal fat, assessed by measurement of waist circumference or waist-to-hip ratio, is independently associated with higher risk for diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Measurement of the waist circumference is a surrogate for visceral adipose tissue and should be performed in the horizontal plane above the iliac crest. Cut points that define higher risk for men and women based on ethnicity have been proposed by the International Diabetes Federation (Table 75-3).
The root causes of the alarming health indicators in Afghanistan are poverty and the two
decades of warfare that stalled economic and social progress and led to destruction of
livelihoods and high levels of disability.
The goal of the conference was to share lessons learned in Africa about men’s participation
in reproductive health in order to develop new or enhance existing approaches for French-
speaking African countries. Men in French-speaking African countries play key roles in
reproductive health, whether as individual family members or as decision-makers at com-
munity and national levels. Most service delivery and information campaigns, however,
focus on women.
Environmental toxins, including exposure to lead, pesticides, and other chemicals,
unquestionably affect fertility in men and women. Researchers have documented many
examples, the strongest cases involving industrial and occupational exposures. These usually
involve small numbers of people exposed to high levels of contamination.
