  • The aim of the study was to investigate the crystallization kinetics and solidification behaviour of Fe60Co8Mo5Zr10W2B15 bulk glass forming alloy. The solidification behaviour in near-equilibrium and non-equilibrium cooling conditions was studied. The eutectic and peritectic reactions were found to exist in the solidification sequence of the alloy. The bulk metallic glass formation was achieved by using two methods: quenching from the liquid state and quenching from the semi-state.

  • Electrochemistry, long-time corner stone for fundamental chemistry and physics, now plays an important role in many areas of applied science and technology. A very broad range of applications of electrochemical principles and technologies is found in materials science. Electrochemical deposition of metals and alloys, formation of oxide films and semi-conductors, corrosion and corrosion protection, new polymer materials that can switch between metallic conductivity and semi-conducting properties, and new applications in fast-evolving nanotechnologies are just some of the examples....

  • This book consists of a collection of review chapters that summarize the recent progress in the areas of metal and semiconductor nanosized crystals (nanocrystals). The interest in the optical properties of nanoparticles dates back to Faraday’s experiments on nanoscale gold. In these experiments, Faraday noticed the remarkable dependence of the color of gold particles on their size. The size dependence of the optical spectra of semiconductor nanocrystals was first discovered much later (in the 1980s) by Ekimov and coworkers in experiments on semiconductor-doped glasses.

  • Many visual devices and gadgets preceded cinema, too many to list here in detail. A widespread and well-known one was the camera obscura, first constructed in 1645, which projected views in a dark room, for painters. Around the same time Anastasius Kircher built a special room to project images with mirrors, which looked somewhat like a cinema. A specialised building with many people using specialised equipment was necessary to project the images.

  • HERBERT bowed with a muted clank—indicating he probably needed oiling somewhere—and presented Alice with a perfect martini on a silver tray. He stood holding the tray, a white, permanent porcelain smile on his smooth metal face, as Alice sipped the drink and grimaced. "It's a good martini, Herbert," said Alice. "Thank you. But, dammit, I wish you didn't have that everlasting smile!" "I am very sorry, Miss Alice, but I am unable to alter myself in any way," replied Herbert in his polite, hollow voice. He retired to a corner and stood impassively, still holding the tray. Herbert had found...

  • To research the volume and components of solid waste, we surveyed household waste with three different incomes (high, middle and low incomes). Then waste is separated into 34 waste components and 9 main waste groups containing organic waste (easily decomposed waste such as vegetable, root, fruit, left food.. to make the compost and difficultly decomposed waste), paper, plastic, metal, glass, rubber and leather, cloth, dangerous substance, and other waste. Besides, definition of all groups of waste is also discussed. ...

  • Vaginal pool smear: The aspiration can be performed after the introduction of unlubricated speculum. The technique allows collection of cells under direct vision from posterior fornix pool. When a speculum is not employed the pipette is gently introduced in to the vagina until resistance is encountered. It is important to compress the suction bulb during the introduction of the pipette to avoid collecting the cellular material of the lower vaginal origin. The cellular material is spread on a clean glass slide and fixed immediately.

  • Plastics have evolved to be a very useful material. Today, plastics are used in almost every area, from small bottle caps, disposable cutlery, and packages for dairy products, to large containers, such as laundry baskets and garbage pails. Plastics have transitioned from a “cheap” substitute for metal and glass to the material of choice providing almost unlimited design freedom, unique properties, and significant cost savings. Figure 2.1 shows various industrial containers and house wares that create durable products in cycles from 10–30 seconds....

  • This book contains chapters on nanocomposites for engineering hard materials for high performance aircraft, rocket and automobile use, using laser pulses to form metal coatings on glass and quartz, and also tungsten carbide-cobalt nanoparticles using high voltage discharges. A major section of this book is largely devoted to chapters outlining and applying analytic methods needed for studies of nanocomposites. As such, this book will serve as good resource for such analytic methods.

  • While driving on a busy city street one night a few years ago, I flinched as something from out of the sky crashed down on my windshield, striking it with a tremendous thud. The thing startled me and I heard the glass give under the object’s force—but it didn’t crack. I stopped, got out, and looked around. On the side of the road I spotted the menace—a section of tailpipe that apparently had been struck and thrown up into the air by a passing vehicle. The rusty metal object landed hard, leaving a few deep scratches on my windshield—the safety glass held up under the...

  • As we all know, ceramic materials are inorganic, non-metallic, solid, and inert materials. Things are made from them by the action of heat and subsequent cooling, which may be crystalline or partly crystalline. The definition of ceramic is often restricted to inorganic crystalline materials, as opposed to the noncrystalline glasses, which involve several steps of the ceramic process, and their mechanical properties behave similarly to ceramic materials.

Most people associate metal cans with strength and can’t believe plastic can be as strong as steel—even people in the packaging industry. “I had one client take a #10 pouch and It tastes better throw it across the factory floor to see if Food packaged in a conventional can the seal would hold,” says Hoss.

  • The use of plastics has increased almost 20-fold in the last 30 years. Plastics have come on the scene as the result of a continual search for man-made substances that can perform better or can be produced at a lower cost than natural materials such as wood, glass, and metal, which require mining, refining, processing, milling, and machining.
