  • As a drug of abuse methamphetamine (MA) has received tremendous press, much of which has been inaccurate. For example people do not become addicted to MA after one exposure; it is not inherently more reinforcing than other drugs with abuse potential. Moreover, treatment for MA addiction can be effective; in fact it often appears to be as effective as treatment for cocaine addiction (e.g., Copeland & Sorensen, 2001; Luchansky et al., 2007). That is not to say, of course, that MA is benign. It is an incredibly dangerous drug.

However, in recent years, it has been increasing markedly; 3,500 tablets of LSD were seized in 1996, while 53,043 tablets in 2000 (about 15-fold increase), arousing a serious concern about the phenomenon. LSD is a compound chemically modified from ergot alkaloid produced by a bacterium Claviceps purpurea.

Until the beginning of the twentieth century, the agents used were all of natural origin, including many derived from plants as well as elements such as antimony, sulfur, mercury, and arsenic. The sixteenth-century alchemist and physician Paracelsus used mercury and arsenic in his treatment of syphilis, worms, and other diseases that were common at that time; his cure rates, however, remain unknown.
