The Minamata poisoning episode provided local researchers with the hard evidence that first linked
mercury discharges to its bioaccumulation in the environment. Cats in Minamata were the first to show
signs of mercury poisoning, although at the time the unusual behaviour exhibited by the cats was
unexplained. The disease was known locally as “dancing cat disease” in reference to the uncontrollable
muscle spasms and tremors seen in the poisoned cats.
Experts agree that source control is the only completely effective way to remove
pollutants from indoor environments. They also agree that total eradication of indoor
air pollutants is often not feasible or practical. A more realistic goal is to use building
materials, furnishings, finishes, office equipment, cleaning products and processes that
emit low levels of VOCs.
These interactions are discussed further in section I.B below. Factors such as rapid
population growth, inequitable access to productive assets, especially land, the neglect of agriculture
outside high potential areas, and the impact of external shocks, combine in certain areas to produce
and reproduce poverty. Limited alternative non-farm income opportunities reinforce this situation.
Poor households tend to respond either by migrating or by other options such as an expansion of
farming activity to open new lands to cultivation, which may increase the pressure on natural
With historically low interest rates and the unprecedented monetary
and fiscal stimulus measures taken to combat the market downturn of
2008–2009, many believe that the Fed has no choice but to begin raising
interest rates in the near future. That is a normal course of action and
signals that the Fed believes the economy is on sounder footing. Yet, the
prospect of rising interest rates provides much consternation for bond
investors, who may be disserved by such action.
The challenges facing the U.S. military at home and abroad have highlighted the need for officers, including health care officers, who are educated and trained in joint matters and prepared to take on the new roles and responsibilities demanded by the current environment. This research, part of a larger project examining the
This collection of papers examines emerging security trends that will shape the Persian Gulf in the coming years. The authors address a number of topics that will affect regional security, including prospects for economic and political reform, civil-military relations, regime change, energy security, the spread of new information technologies, and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
By 2020, a better molecular definition of “health” and “ill-health” will have been achieved and early
markers that identify the transition between the two states will have been identified. This will be
delivered by studying cellular and molecular mechanisms of both states and by studying the interplay
between environmental factors to which the population is exposed and their genetic make-up.
Given the unusual circumstances of Cambodia and their likely impacts on the older population,
considerable effort was made to develop a survey questionnaire that not only would cover the standard
issues about elderly economic, social and physical well-being that are the focus of recent surveys of older
age populations in the region but also issues specific for the situation in Cambodia.
In this conceptual chapter, we explore the above issues by reviewing relevant literatures,
identifying current trends and discussing the potential impact of these on the veterinary
profession. With few studies in this particular area, the authors adopt an inductive
approach, designed to generate new understanding and propositions for further research
(Rosa & Dawson, 2006). Following this introductory section, we examine some of the recent
changes within the agricultural sector and the impact of these on the veterinary profession.
The longer migrants live and adapt to their destination country, the more their cancer rates
converge towards those in that country. This has been shown for stomach, colon and
prostate cancer (McKay, 2003). Migrants from non-western countries to Europe were found
to be more prone to cancers that are related to infections experienced in early life, such as
liver, cervical and stomach cancer. In contrast, migrants of non-western origin were less
likely to suffer from cancers related to a western lifestyle, e.g. colorectal and breast cancer
(Arnold et al., 2010)....
Together, we have to successfully make this important transition which is the most demanding
challenge our industry has to meet since, at the beginning of the 1930s, cinema progressed from silent
films to films with sound. Although more than 2,100 screens are equipped in France today (i.e. 40% of
the total screens count) – one of the most rapidly growing d-cinema market in the world - this
challenge is far from being accomplished. We have...
Increasing evidence suggests that serious mental illness is neurodevelopmental and the
onset of pre-psychotic symptoms occurs in adolescence, at a time when the cerebral cortex is
still developing. As with many complex disorders (e.g. hypertension, epilepsy, and
diabetes), there appear to be many aetiological pathways that might lead to the final mixture
of behavioral signs and symptoms we label ‘schizophrenia’.
The significance and potential of the protocol go well beyond Africa. The treaty affirms
reproductive choice and autonomy as a key human right and contains a number of global firsts.
For example, it represents the first time that an international human rights instrument has
explicitly articulated a woman’s right to abortion when pregnancy results from sexual assault,
rape, or incest; when continuation of the pregnancy endangers the life or health of the pregnant
woman; and in cases of grave fetal defects that are incompatible with life.
The term fi nance of the social insurance means incomes and expenditure on benefi ts
fi nanced by the Social Insurance Fund (SIF), that is benefi ts from the old-age pensions’ fund,
pension fund, sickness fund and work accident fund.
And family benefi ts, health benefi ts, benefi ts in respect of unemployment and benefi ts from
the social insurance of farmers are fi nanced in a different way.
The Social Insurance Fund is the appropriated State Fund. It has been established by virtue of the
law as from 1 January 1999, to perform tasks in the fi eld of...
While macro-level data display these relationships very clearly, micro-level data—especially
in India—suggest more caution in attributing the differences in health and fertility behaviour of young
women directly to their schooling, or to the autonomy of young women.
Destinations in authentic (often Third World) countries are often off the beaten track. Tourists
enjoy authentic experiences in places which have experienced limited tourism development.
Emerging destinations in Asia, South America and Africa attract a small number of adventurous
tourists who are prepared to forego their comfort in order to interact with local communities and
unspoiled surroundings. Although these regions may develop at a later stage to mass tourism
destinations, they need to be planned properly in order to sustain their resources.
The authorities have made continuous efforts to build benchmarks at different points along
the yield curve. The aim of this strategy is to further develop the interest rate term structure
in the local currency, which would allow better pricing and liquidity of bonds issued both by
the government itself and by the private sector. To this end, the authorities have increased the
average maturity of the outstanding debt and smoothed its maturity profile.
The proliferation of low-power and ultralow-power electronics has enabled a rapid
growth of autonomous devices that ranges from consumer electronics and nomad
devices to autonomous sensors and sensor networks used in industrial and military
environments. Hence, a wide range of application domains has been impacted by such
technologies (aeronautic, civil engineering, biomedical engineering, home automation,
The aim of this paper is to compare pricing and performance of mutual
funds with two types of guarantees: a lookback guarantee and an interest
rate guarantee. In a simulation analysis of different portfolios based on
stock, bond, real estate and money market indexes, we first calibrate
guarantee costs to be the same for both investment guarantee funds. Second,
their performance is contrasted, measured with the Sharpe ratio, omega
and Sortino ratio, and a test with respect to first-, second- and third-order
stochastic dominance is provided.
