  • The progress of data mining technology and large public popularity establish a need for a comprehensive text on the subject. The series of books entitled by "Data Mining" address the need by presenting in-depth description of novel mining algorithms and many useful applications. In addition to understanding each section deeply, the two books present useful hints and strategies to solving problems in the following chapters.

  • Advances in Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining aims to help data miners, researchers, scholars, and PhD students who wish to apply data mining techniques. The primary contribution of this book is highlighting frontier fields and implementations of the knowledge discovery and data mining. It seems to be same things are repeated again. But in general, same approach and techniques may help us in different fields and expertise areas. This book presents knowledge discovery and data mining applications in two different sections....

  • The energy demand for the endothermic gasification reaction is met by the combustion of residual char in the fast bed combustor. The circulating bed materials act as heat carrier between the two fluidized beds and maintain the required temperature in gasifier. Therefore, the hydrodynamics of such a dual fluidized beds system needs to be thoroughly understood for successful design and operation of the system for industrial application.

  • Antiquity Simple machines, such as the club and oar (examples of the lever), are prehistoric. More complex engines using human power, animal power, water power, wind power and even steam power date back to antiquity. Human power was focused by the use of simple engines, such as the capstan, windlass or treadmill, and with ropes, pulleys, and block and tackle arrangements; this power was transmitted usually with the forces multiplied and the speed reduced. These were used in cranes and aboard ships in Ancient Greece, as well as in mines, water pumps and siege engines in Ancient Rome.

  • To learn the white space availability at a given location, the database could use one of two schemes: use spectrum measurements for that location, or compute spectrum availabil- ity using RF propagation models. The former, a data-driven approach, requires extensive wardriving measurements at low sensitivity thresholds and may take a long time to be complete. Furthermore, the measurements will have to be repeated when- ever the primary user’s transmission characteristics, such as transmit power, antenna height, license terms, etc., change.

  • Natural language questions have become popular in web search. However, various questions can be formulated to convey the same information need, which poses a great challenge to search systems. In this paper, we automatically mined 5w1h question reformulation patterns from large scale search log data.

  • In recent years, error mining approaches were developed to help identify the most likely sources of parsing failures in parsing systems using handcrafted grammars and lexicons. However the techniques they use to enumerate and count n-grams builds on the sequential nature of a text corpus and do not easily extend to structured data.

  • We show that unseen words account for a large part of the translation error when moving to new domains. Using an extension of a recent approach to mining translations from comparable corpora (Haghighi et al., 2008), we are able to find translations for otherwise OOV terms. We show several approaches to integrating such translations into a phrasebased translation system, yielding consistent improvements in translations quality (between 0.5 and 1.5 Bleu points) on four domains and two language pairs. ...

  • This paper presents Engkoo 1 , a system for exploring and learning language. It is built primarily by mining translation knowledge from billions of web pages - using the Internet to catch language in motion. Currently Engkoo is built for Chinese users who are learning English; however the technology itself is language independent and can be extended in the future.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel system for translating organization names from Chinese to English with the assistance of web resources. Firstly, we adopt a chunkingbased segmentation method to improve the segmentation of Chinese organization names which is plagued by the OOV problem. Then a heuristic query construction method is employed to construct an efficient query which can be used to search the bilingual Web pages containing translation equivalents.

  • Supervised polarity classification systems are typically domain-specific. Building these systems involves the expensive process of annotating a large amount of data for each domain. A potential solution to this corpus annotation bottleneck is to build unsupervised polarity classification systems. However, unsupervised learning of polarity is difficult, owing in part to the prevalence of sentimentally ambiguous reviews, where reviewers discuss both the positive and negative aspects of a product. ...

  • In this paper, we introduce a multilingual access and retrieval system with enhanced query translation and multilingual document retrieval, by mining bilingual terminologies and aligned document directly from the set of comparable corpora which are to be searched upon by users. By extracting bilingual terminologies and aligning bilingual documents with similar content prior to the search process provide more accurate translated terms for the in-domain data and support multilingual retrieval even without the use of translation tool during retrieval time....

  • We introduce an error mining technique for automatically detecting errors in resources that are used in parsing systems. We applied this technique on parsing results produced on several million words by two distinct parsing systems, which share the syntactic lexicon and the pre-parsing processing chain. We were thus able to identify missing and erroneous information in these resources.

  • Deriving the polarity and strength of opinions is an important research topic, attracting significant attention over the last few years. In this work, to measure the strength and polarity of an opinion, we consider the economic context in which the opinion is evaluated, instead of using human annotators or linguistic resources. We rely on the fact that text in on-line systems influences the behavior of humans and this effect can be observed using some easy-to-measure economic variables, such as revenues or product prices. ...

  • Adaptive Information Extraction systems (IES) are currently used by some Semantic Web (SW) annotation tools as support to annotation (Handschuh et al., 2002; Vargas-Vera et al., 2002). They are generally based on fully supervised methodologies requiring fairly intense domain-specific annotation. Unfortunately, selecting representative examples may be difficult and annotations can be incorrect and require time. In this paper we present a methodology that drastically reduce (or even remove) the amount of manual annotation required when annotating consistent sets of pages. ...

  • In this paper, we present a novel approach for automatic summarization. Our system, called CBSEAS, integrates a new method to detect redundancy at its very core, and produce more expressive summaries than previous approaches. Moreover, we show that our system is versatile enough to integrate opinion mining techniques, so that it is capable of producing opinion oriented summaries. The very competitive results obtained during the last Text Evaluation Conference (TAC 2008) show that our approach is efficient. ...
