  • Fox et al. (1998) carried out a logistic regression analysis with discrete covariates in which one of the covariates was missing for a substantial percentage of respondents. The missing data problem was addressed using the “approximate Bayesian bootstrap.” We return to this missing data problem to provide a form of case study. Using the Fox et al. (1998) data for expository purposes we carry out a comparative analysis of eight of the most commonly used techniques for dealing with missing data. We then report on two sets of simulations based on the original data....

  • Data warehouses usually have some missing values due to unavailable data that affect the number and the quality of the generated rules. The missing values could affect the coverage percentage and number of reduces generated from a specific data set. Missing values lead to the difficulty of extracting useful information from data set. Association rule algorithms typically only identify patterns that occur in the original form throughout the database.

  • Methods for analysing trauma injury data with missing values, collected at a UK hospital, are reported. One measure of injury severity, the Glasgow coma score, which is known to be associated with patient death, is missing for 12% of patients in the dataset. In order to include these 12% of patients in the analysis, three different data imputation techniques are used to estimate the missing values.

  • This paper develops theory missing in the sizeable literature that uses data envelopment analysis to construct return : risk ratios for investment funds. It explores the production possibility set of the investment funds to identify an appropriate form of returns to scale. It discusses what risk and return measures can justifiably be combined and how to deal with negative risks, and identifies suitable sets of measures. It identifies the problems of failing to deal with diversification and develops an iterative approximation procedure to deal with it.

  • Academic and policy interest in the U.S. welfare system has increased dramatically over the past 15 years, an interest that has accelerated and is currently at an all-time high. Beginning in the late 1980s with welfare reform initiatives in a few states around the country and continuing in the first half of the 1990s as more states made changes in their income support programs, welfare reform culminated at the federal level with the passage of the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) in 1996.

  • This chapter presents the steps necessary to prepare data for data analysis. After reading this chapter, you should understand: The importance of editing the collected raw data to detect errors and omissions, how coding is used to assign number and other symbols to answers and to categorize responses, the use of content analysis to interpret and summarize open questions, problems with and solutions for “don’t know” responses and handling missing data, the options for data entry and manipulation.

It assumes that the reader is an SQL programmer with a year or more of experience. It is not an introductory book, so let’s not have any gripes in the Amazon.com reviews about that, as we did with the prior editions. The first edition was published ten years ago and became a minor classic among working SQL programmers.

  • You might be tempted to yell something like this when you discover that Microsoft has implemented some, but not all, of the Win32 API in the .NET Framework. In some cases, you might find that Microsoft mislaid the feature in an out−of−the−way spot, but more often than not, the feature is simply missing. It’s not documented anywhere and Microsoft doesn’t give you even one clue as to where the feature might have gone. A visit to the newsgroups will often yield a pathetic claim that the missing feature will appear in the next version of the .

  • Relational databases hold data, right? They do indeed, but to think of a database as nothing more than a container for data is to miss out on the profound power that underlies relational technology. A far more powerful way of thinking lies in relational technologys foundation in the mathematical disciplines of logic and set theory.
