This volume is an eclectic mix of applications of Monte Carlo methods in many fields of research should not be surprising, because of the ubiquitous use of these methods in many fields of human endeavor. In an attempt to focus attention on a manageable set of applications, the main thrust of this book is to emphasize applications of Monte Carlo simulation methods in biology and medicine.
Harrison's Internal Medicine Chapter 66. Stem Cell Biology
Stem Cell Biology: Introduction
Stem cell biology is a relatively new field that explores the characteristics and possible clinical applications of the different types of pluripotential cells that serve as the progenitors of more differentiated cell types. In addition to potential therapeutic applications (Chap. 67), patient-derived stem cells can also provide disease models and a means to test drug effectiveness.
The model used–an extension of the log-linear dividend-price ratio model of Campbell
and Shiller (1988, 1989)–facilitates a straightforward test of these alternatives in a linear
regression with the log price-earnings ratio as dependent variable. The regression results suggest
that the correlation between the price-earnings ratio and expected inflation is the result of both
effects; that is, an increase in expected inflation reduces equity prices because it is associated
with both lower expected real earnings growth and higher required real returns.

Therefore, ex vivo expansion of BMSCs is required to obtain a
sufficient number of transplantable cells. Since BMSCs require several kinds of supportive
factors for their growth, it is standard practice to use fetal bovine serum (FBS), while
autologous human serum (HS) and pooled allogeneic HS have also been used. It has been
suggested that FBS may not be favorable for clinical applications due to the possible risk of
contamination (prions, viruses, zoonosis) or immunological reactions against xenogeneic
serum antigens (Agata et al., 2009).
In the past 15 years, molecular biologists and geneticists have uncovered
some of the most basic mechanisms by means of which normal stem cells
in a certain organ or tissue develop into cancerous tumors. This biological
knowledge serves as a basis for various models of carcinogenesis.
Policy-relevant background – This is an
estimate based on air pollution models of the
natural background ozone concentrations that
would exist without sources of air pollution
from human activity, and therefore cannot be
affected by emissions control efforts (Fiore
Active database systems require facilities to specify triggers
that fire when specified events occur. We propose a language
for specifying composite events as eveti expressions, formed
using event operators and events (primitive or composite). An
event expression maps an event history to anothe-r event history
that contains only the events at which the event expression is
“satisfied” and at which the trigger should 6re. We present
several examples illustrating how quite complex event
specifications are possible using event expressions.
Air pollution is one of the most serious
environmental threats to urban populations
(Cohen 2005). Exposures vary among and within
urban areas, but all people living in cities are
exposed, and many are harmed, by current levels
of pollutants in many large cities. Infants, young
children, seniors and people who have lung
and heart conditions are especially affected, but
even young, healthy adults are not immune to
harm from poor air quality.
Estrogen acts as a proconvulsant in several animal models of epilepsy, including amygdalal
kindling and pentylenetetrazol administration in ovariectomized rats (Hom and
Buterbaugh, 1986). Estrogen induces the formation of new excitatory synapses in the CA1
region of the hippocampus; and further, this estrogenic induction involves activation of Nmethyl-
Daspartate (NMDA) receptors (McEwen, 2002). Increasing the complexity of
hippocampal synaptic density is likely a mechanism for the proconvulsant activity of
We envision a computer program that could offer effective critique to help indi-
vidual students learn designing. However, our understanding of design critiquing as
yet is too spotty or incomplete to realize this vision. Therefore, as a step in this
direction we aim to develop a systematic framework to account for the decisions
that a critic makes.
We built the Furniture Design Critic system to develop a computational model
of design critiquing.
Research shows that sensational news stories as well as popular romance novels
often feature themes related to important topics in evolutionary psychology. In the first of
four studies described in this paper we examined the song lyrics from three Billboard
charts: Country, Pop, and R&B. A content analysis of the lyrics revealed 18 reproductive
themes that read like an outline for a course in evolutionary psychology. Approximately
92% of the 174 songs that made it into the Top Ten in 2009 contained one or more
reproductive messages, with an average of 10.49 reproductive...
Economic policy makers, macroprudential supervisors or investors are interested in reli-
able estimates of the equilibrium level of credit in the economy. While earlier theoretical
and empirical studies concentrated mostly on the aggregate level of credit to the pri-
vate sector or the value of corporate credit, more recent studies focus on the problem
of credit to households.
In addition to the results prepared in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles ("GAAP"), the company uses
adjusted EBITDA, a non-GAAP financial measure, in analyzing and assessing the overall performance of the business. The
company defines adjusted EBITDA as loss from continuing operations before income taxes, interest income and expense,
depreciation and amortization, stock based compensation, restructuring expense, acquisition and integration expenses and
certain other non-cash income and expense items.
Other than the mandatory audits of publicly financed Presidential campaigns and national
party convention committees, Section 438(b) of the Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA)
allows the Commission to audit a committee if its reports do not meet the threshold require-
ments for substantial compliance with the Act. Campaign Finance Analysts in the Commis-
sion’s Reports Analysis Division (“RAD”) review every report following detailed procedures
approved by the Commission.
This paper considers the problem of policy evaluation in a modern society with heterogeneous
agents and diverse groups with conflicting interests. Several different approaches to the policy evaluation
problem are compared including the approach adopted in modern welfare economics, the classical
representative agent approach adopted in macroecononomics and the microeconomic treatment effect
approach. A new approach to the policyevaluationproblemis developed and applied that combines and
extends the best features of these earlier approaches.
