Programmed cell death is a major component of both
normal development and disease. The roles of cell death
during either embryogenesis or pathogenesis, the signals
that modulate this event, and the mechanisms of cell
demise are the major subjects that drive research in this
field. Increasing evidence obtained both in vitro and
in vivo supports the hypothesis that a variety of cell death
programs maybe triggered in distinct circumstances.
Tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-related apoptosis-inducing
ligand (TRAIL) is amember of theTNFfamilyandapotent
inducer of apoptosis. TRAIL has been shown to effectively
limit tumor growthin vivowithout detectable cytotoxic side-effects. Interferon (IFN)-coften modulates the anticancer
activities of TNF family members including TRAIL. How-ever, little is known about the mechanism. To explore the
mechanism, A549, HeLa, LNCaP, Hep3B andHepG2 cells
were pretreated with IFN-c, and then exposed to TRAIL.

In the present study, we investigated the mechanisms of the resistance to
CD95-mediated cell death and the effects of interferon-cin modulating the
susceptibility to CD95-induced apoptosis of human astroglioma cells. We

Retinoids are potent immune modulators that inhibit Fas ligand (FasL) expression and thereby repress the activationinduced apoptosis of immature thymocytes and T-cell hybridomas.
