  • France holds a rather unusual position in the field of evolutionary biology. Whereas French naturalists from Buffon, Cuvier and Lamarck onwards made great discoveries in centuries past, French biologists missed the turning when it came to genetics. Until the 1970s, most French biologists were convinced that genetics was not as interesting as developmental science (some "rare species", for example R. Chandebois, still hold this view). For them, the general principles of heredity resided in the cytoplasm rather than in the genome.

  • Several biological functions in mammals are regulated in a circadian fash-ion. The molecular mechanisms orchestrating these circadian rhythms have been unravelled. The biological clock, with its core transcriptional unit Bmal1⁄CLOCK, is composed of several self-sustaining feedback loops. In this study, we describe another mechanism impinging on the core compo-nents of the circadian clock.

  • The basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor DEC1 is expressed in a circadian manner in the suprachiasmatic nucleus where it seems to play a role in regulating the mammalian circadian rhythm by suppressing the CLOCK/BMAL1-activated promoter. The interaction of DEC1 with BMAL1 has been suggested as one of the molecular mechanisms of the suppression [Honma, S., Kawamoto, T., Takagi, Y., Fujimoto, K., Sato, F., Noshiro, M., Kato, Y. & Honma, K. (2002)Nature419, 841–844].
