  • Carbohydrates are sugars and starches derived from cereals, tubers, roots, and other substances such as cellulose and lignin from plant cell walls, vessels and woody tissues. Carbohydrates do mainly provide energy for maintenance and production. A surplus of energy is stored as body fat. A part of the carbohydrates is crude fibre (CF), the remaining is nitrogen-free extract (NFE). The latter consists of sugars, starches and sugar-like substances. Sugars and starches are much easier to digest than CF.

  • Temporal trends in unsafe abortion have been inconsistent internationally (figure 2). Between 1995 and 2000, a decline of 5 or more percentage points took place in the unsafe abortion rate in eastern, middle, and western Africa, the Caribbean, and Central America. Other developing areas had no appreciable change in the rate of unsafe abortion. 6 Unsafe abortions vary substantially by age across regions: adolescents (15–19 years) account for 25% of all unsafe abortions in Africa, whereas the percentage in Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean is much lower (figure 3).

  • In view of the dynamic growth in the luxury market and the availability of luxury goods to a wider range of consumers than ever before, the luxury market has transformed from its traditional conspicuous consumption model to a new experiential luxury sensibility marked by a change in the way consumers define luxury. In a global context, it is critically important for luxury researchers and marketers to understand why consumers buy luxury, what they believe luxury is and how their perception of luxury value impacts their buying behavior.

  • Ask a salesperson to follow a procedure, write a report, or update the sales system, and they will tell you they do not have time. They’ll tell you, “Sales is an art.” Is sales a process or is it something created for each sale? Is it okay to occasionally update the Sales Force System? Is it really necessary to update the Customer Relation Manage- ment system? Or do you get a free pass? Do you really need to follow the procedure that requires a follow-up letter going out within 24 hours, or can you skip it because . . .well, you are not in the mood?...

  • However, and in particular in children, it is unclear whether non-enzyme-inducing AED monotherapy (lamotrigine, sulthiame) or minimal enzyme-inducing AED monotherapy (oxcarbazepine) seem to have any adverse effects on linear growth or to cause vitamin D deficiency in otherwise healthy children with epilepsy (Luef & Rauchenzauner, 2008). In contrast to adults, there is controversy over the association of chronic AED use with an increased incidence of fractures in children (Souverein et al, 2005; Petty, et al, 2007).

  • Conventional treatments of hemorrhagic cystitis are hyper-hydration, diuresis and bladder irrigation to wash out viral particles and clots, and to prevent retrograde infection to kidneys and post-renal failure due to urethral obstruction caused by clots. High titer γ- globulin to specific adenovirus serotype is also administrated. In particular, serotype 35 specific antibody was present only at a very low titer in pooled gamma globulin (Flomenberg et al., 1987).

In Section 3we describe the service’s formally defined application programming in- terface, which is an extension of the familiar publish/subscribe protocol [Birman 1993]. Several candidate server topologies and protocols are presented in Sec- tion 4.

  • Allergic diseases are an adverse reaction of the immune system against otherwise innocuous substances and are characterized by their high complexity. Patients can be asymptomatic or their involvement could be as severe as asthma. The complex nature of the phenotypes involved seems to point to genetic and environmental factors implication. Familiar aggregation or genetic implication in the development of these diseases is well reported, and experts seem to agree that atopic diseases affect homozygotic twins more than dizigotic twins (Ownby, 1990, Duffy et al., 1990)....

  • The term stress was introduced into the biomedical field by Hans Selye (1936) in reference to a General Adaptation Syndrome which would consist of all non-specific systemic reactions that occur during an intense and chronic exposure to a stressor (e.g., pressure at work and poor diet). This syndrome would be different from the specific adaptive reactions (such as muscle hypertrophy caused by exercise performed on a regular basis) and immune responses (Selye, 1936).

  • Depression could be called the black death of the twenty-first century due to its high prevalence (life time prevalence could be 10-15% or higher). It often occurs in people during their middle age, 30-50 years old, and costs much because of the medical resources used to treat it and the higher suicide and rate of recurrence. In addition, people with depression are often comorbid with anxiety disorders and lack of efficient treatment. Even for the patients with anxiety disorders, the most useful medications are antidepressants....

  • The costs of uncompensated care are estimated to be about $41 billion in 2004. Projected government spending available to pay for the care of the uninsured in 2004 is $34.6 billion—about 85% of the total uncompensated care bill. More than half of all funds for uncompensated care come from the federal government, with the majority (70%) of federal dollars flowing through Medicare and Medicaid. Most government dollars for uncompensated care goes for hospital care—which is paid indirectly to hospitals based partly on the share of uncompensated care they provide.

  • We started by noting Compartamos’s outsize return on equity above 50 percent in 2004. The return compares very favorably with Citigroup’s 2004 return on equity of 16 percent, for example. Table 3 shows that the median return on equity for nongovernmental microfinance organizations is 3 percent and, for microfinance banks, 10 percent. The figures are impressive, but well below returns for either Citigroup or Compartamos in 2004. The numbers are larger, though, when we condition on profitability (columns 4, 8, and 12; here the returns to equity are 11.4 and 11.5).

  • It is a vision I have seen: upon a vast plain, men and women are gathered in dense throngs, crouched in uncomfortable and distressing positions, their fingers hooked in the straps of their boots. They are engaged in lifting themselves; tugging and straining until they grow red in the face, exhausted. The perspiration streams from their foreheads, they show every symptom of distress; the eyes of all are fixed, not upon each other, nor upon their boot-straps, but upon the sky above.

  • The traditional classification of acute leukemia used criteria proposed by the French– American–British Cooperative Group (FAB) , using the 30% bone marrow blast cell cutoff (Bennett et al, 1985). This classification system originally distinguished different leukemia types by morphologic features and cytochemical studies, particularly myeloperoxidase (or Sudan black B) and non-specific esterase staining. It was revised to include leukemia types that could only be accurately identified with the addition of immunophenotyping or electron microscopic studies (Bennett et al., 1991)....
