  • The wide geographical distribution of the rice plant ( Oryza sativa L.) and its long history of cultivation in Asian countries have led to the development of a great diversity of varietal types. Similarly, workers in various rice-growing countries use different terms to designate identical morphological and physiological characters, agronomic traits, gene symbols, and cultural practices. Whereas varietal diversity in germ plasm is desired in rice breeding, variations in nomenclature hinder scientific communication among the workers.

  • A morphologic and morphosyntactic analyzer for the Italian language has been implemented in VM/Prolog 131 at the IBM Romc Scientific Center as part of a project on text understanding. Aim of this project is the development of a prototype which analyzes short narrative texts (press agency news) and gives a formal representation of their "meaning" as a set of first order logic expressions. Question answering features are also provided. The morphologic analyzer processes every word by means of a context free grammar, in order to obtain its morphologic and syntactic characteristics. ...

  • Most natural language processing tasks require lexical semantic information. Automated acquisition of this information would thus increase the robustness and portability of NLP systems. This paper describes an acquisition method which makes use of fixed correspondences between derivational affixes and lexical semantic information. One advantage of this method, and of other methods that rely only on surface characteristics of language, is that the necessary input is currently available.

  • Their hardened hooves and lighter bones enable them to endure long migrations. These adaptive attributes have facilitated their importation and spread by Indian and Arabian merchants across the Red Sea to the drier agro-ecological regions of the Horn of Africa (Loftus and Cunningham 2000). The Large East African Zebu cattle breeds, like the present-day Boran of Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia, and the Butana and Kenana of the Sudan have very similar morphological characteristics to that of the zebu breeds of Asia. They are maintained by mainly pastoral communities in the Horn of Africa....

  • Prenatal diagnosis, traditionally used as a synonymous for invasive fetal testing and evaluation of chromosomal constellation, presently encompasses many other issues like pedigree analyses, fetal risk assessment, population screening, genetic counseling and fetal diagnostic testing as well. Ultrasound guided chorionic villus samling (CVS), amniocentesis and, to a lesser extent, fetal blood sampling are used routinely in fetal medicine units. Other fetal tissue biopsies such as skin, liver and muscle biopsy are used only rarely.

  • These are the questions addressed in this paper. Using a rich data set that enables us to measure both the amount and the precise characteristics of executive stock option holdings, we examine the connection between the risk-taking incentives of stock options and various measures of firm risk. We find that controlling for other effects, CEOs with option holdings that are large relative to their wealth and whose value is sensitive to stock-price volatility tend to increase the volatility of the firms they control.

The number of species of edible mushrooms in Japan is about 300; that of toxic mushrooms is said to be about 30. Various types of toxic mushrooms exist; some show high toxicity, while others show hallucinogenic actions. Morphological and chemical analyses for mushrooms are occasionally required in forensic science practice.
