  • A number of results in the study of realtime sentence comprehension have been explained by computational models as resulting from the rational use of probabilistic linguistic information. Many times, these hypotheses have been tested in reading by linking predictions about relative word difficulty to word-aggregated eye tracking measures such as go-past time. In this paper, we extend these results by asking to what extent reading is well-modeled as rational behavior at a finer level of analysis, predicting not aggregate measures, but the duration and location of each fixation. ...

  • The discussion of the properties of relative international prices has been closely tied with a discussion on the nature of the pricing decisions by ¯rms. 5 The observed slow pass-through of exchange rate changes to consumer prices and deviations from the law of one price for traded goods are consistent with prices of imported goods that are sticky in the currency of the consumer (local currency pricing). This pricing mechanism, however, dampens the expenditure-switching e®ect of nominal exchange rate movements.

  • A preliminary study was carried out in mid 1999 on the status and potential impact of the introduction of exotic fish species in the Mekong Basin. Introductions have been made for four main purposes: aquaculture, stocking into lakes and reservoirs, pest control (mosquito) and the aquarium fish trade. Introductions of exotic species and movements of large quantities of fish for stocking are accompanied by risks to the environment, the possibility of native fish species declining through competition, predation or genetic interference, and the possible spread of disease....

  • 1. STEPPER MOTOR SYSTEMS OVERVIEW Motion Control, in electronic terms, means to accurately control the movement of an object based on either speed, distance, load, inertia or a combination of all these factors. There are numerous types of motion control systems, including; Stepper Motor, Linear Step Motor, DC Brush, Brushless, Servo, Brushless Servo and more. This document will concentrate on Step Motor technology. In Theory, a Stepper motor is a marvel in simplicity. It has no brushes, or contacts.

  • As the development of smart biped robots has been thriving, research and development of personal robots with unique personalities will become an important issue in the next decade. For instance, we might want to have robots capable of affording us pleasure by chatting, singing or joking with us in our homes. Most of these functions are realized by verbal communications. However, motion of a whole body, namely non-verbal communication, also plays an important role. We can get information concerning the personality of a subject when we observe his or her body motion.

  • Soil erosion is a hazard traditionally associated with agriculture in tropical and semi-arid areas and is important for its long-term effects on soil productivity and sustainable agriculture. It is, however, a problem of wider significance occurring additionally on land devoted to forestry, transport and recreation. Erosion also leads to environmental damage through sedimentation, pollution and increased flooding. The costs associated with the movement and deposition of sediment in the landscape frequently outweigh those arising from the long-term loss of soil in eroding fields.

  • Methylation was initially addressed as one of the most primitive mechanisms that organisms utilize to (a) protect genomic DNA and initiate the host resistance mechanism towards foreign DNA insertion and subsequently, (b) control gene expression, (Doerfler & Böhm, 2006). From an evolutionary point of view as well, the catalytic domain in the structure of the methylation enzymes across all organisms has been preserved to perform methyl group addition.

  • The control user should be familiar with servos. The user will understand what a servo is and why it is required in so many applications. This discussion will answer these two basic questions: What is a servo? Why use a servo? Any discussion of servos will have to employ the term ‘‘feedback.’’ Thousands of times every day we require information to be ‘‘fed back’’ to us so that we can perform normal activities. When controlling a car down a highway, feedback is provided to our brain by the gift of sight....

  • Each of us performs thousands of eye movements every day without being aware of how the brain controls them. The oculomotor system is one of the best understood motor systems not only with regard to premotor centers in the central nervous system, but also with regard to the peripheral muscles moving the eye. This has been made possible by intensive multidisciplinary research, including ophthalmologists, neurologists and basic scientists, and is reflected in comprehensive textbooks [i.e. Leigh RJ, Zee DS: The Neurology of Eye Movements. New York, Oxford University Press, 2006]....
