  • The growing popularity of multimedia documents requires language technologies to approach automatic language analysis and generation from yet another perspective: that of its use in multimodal communication. In this paper, we present a support tool for COSMOROE, a theoretical framework for modelling multimedia dialectics. The tool is a text-based search interface that facilitates the exploration of a corpus of audiovisual files, annotated with the COSMOROE relations.

  • The explosive growth of multimedia data, both on the Internet and in domainspecific applications, has produced a pressing need for techniques that support efficient storage, transmission, and retrieval of such information. Indexing (Chapters 7, 14, and 15) and compression (Chapter 8) are complementary methods that facilitate storage, search, retrieval and transmission of imagery, and other multimedia data types.

  • Originally devised to enhance web pages in Netscape 2.0, JavaScript is now faced with being a single-threaded language in a multimedia, multitasking, multicore world. Yet JavaScript has not only persevered since 1995, it’s thrived. One after the other, potential rivals in the browser—Flash, Silverlight, and Java applets, to name a few—have come and (more or less) gone.
