  • Flight controls have advanced considerably throughout the years. In the earliest biplanes flown by the pioneers flight control was achieved by warping wings and control surfaces by means of wires attached to the flying controls in the cockpit. Figure 1.1 clearly shows the multiplicity of rigging and control wires on an early monoplane. Such a means of exercising control was clearly rudimentary and usually barely adequate for the task in hand.

  • Chapter 10 - View integration and implementation compromises. One objective of this chapter is to explain how to unite the business process level REA models for multiple transaction cycles. A second objective is to explain implementation compromises commonly made at each step in conceptual modeling and database design. A final objective of this chapter is to demonstrate retrieval of information from multiple integrated business processes.

  • This paper presents a probabilistic framework that combines multiple knowledge sources for Haptic Voice Recognition (HVR), a multimodal input method designed to provide efficient text entry on modern mobile devices. HVR extends the conventional voice input by allowing users to provide complementary partial lexical information via touch input to improve the efficiency and accuracy of voice recognition.

  • This paper presents a model for summarizing multiple untranscribed spoken documents. Without assuming the availability of transcripts, the model modifies a recently proposed unsupervised algorithm to detect re-occurring acoustic patterns in speech and uses them to estimate similarities between utterances, which are in turn used to identify salient utterances and remove redundancies.

  • Our experience with a critiquing system shows that when the system detects problems with the user's performance, multiple critiques are often produced. Analysis of a corpus of actual critiques revealed that even though each individual critique is concise and coherent, the set of critiques as a whole may exhibit several problems that detract from conciseness and coherence, and consequently assimilation. Thus a text planner was needed that could integrate the text plans for individual communicative goals to produce an overall text plan representing a concise, coherent message. ...

  • A lexicon is an essential component in a generation system but few efforts have been made to build a rich, large-scale lexicon and make it reusable for different generation applications. In this paper, we describe our work to build such a lexicon by combining multiple, heterogeneous linguistic resources which have been developed for other purposes. Novel transformation and integration of resources is required to reuse them for generation.

  • We have analyzed 607 sentences of spontaneous human-computer speech data containing repairs, drawn from a total corpus of 10,718 sentences. We present here criteria and techniques for automatically detecting the presence of a repair, its location, and making the appropriate correction. The criteria involve integration of knowledge from several sources: pattern matching, syntactic and semantic analysis, and acoustics. INTRODUCTION Spontaneous spoken language often includes speech that is not intended by the speaker to be part of the content of the utterance. ...

  • Current SMT systems usually decode with single translation models and cannot benefit from the strengths of other models in decoding phase. We instead propose joint decoding, a method that combines multiple translation models in one decoder. Our joint decoder draws connections among multiple models by integrating the translation hypergraphs they produce individually. Therefore, one model can share translations and even derivations with other models. Comparable to the state-of-the-art system combination technique, joint decoding achieves an absolute improvement of 1.

  • Automatic segmentation is important for making multimedia archives comprehensible, and for developing downstream information retrieval and extraction modules. In this study, we explore approaches that can segment multiparty conversational speech by integrating various knowledge sources (e.g., words, audio and video recordings, speaker intention and context). In particular, we evaluate the performance of a Maximum Entropy approach, and examine the effectiveness of multimodal features on the task of dialogue segmentation. ...

  • In this paper, we present a new approach for word sense disambiguation (WSD) using an exemplar-based learning algorithm. This approach integrates a diverse set of knowledge sources to disambiguate word sense, including part of speech of neighboring words, morphological form, the unordered set of surrounding words, local collocations, and verb-object syntactic relation. We tested our WSD program, named LEXAS, on both a common data set used in previous work, as well as on a large sense-tagged corpus that we separately constructed. ...
