  • Modeling multi-level complex systems is the object of this book. Complex systems are assemblies of several subsystems and are characterized by emergent behavior resulting by nonlinear interactions among subsystems for multiple levels of organization. The complexity of numerous systems is rooted in the existence of many levels of self-organization corresponding to different time and space scales. There is a need to provide general frameworks able to combine several scales and reality levels of the complex systems in one coherent and transdisciplinary discourse.

  • This paper discusses a sequence of deductive parsers, called PAD1 - PAD5, that utilize an a x i o m a t i z a t i o n of the p r i n c i p l e s a n d parameters of GB theory, including a restricted transformational component (Move-a). PAD2 uses an inference control strategy based on the "freeze" predicate of Prolog-II, while PAD3 - 5 utilize the Unfold-Fold transformation to transform the original axiomatization into a form that functions as a recursive descent Prolog parser for the fragment. INTRODUCTION In this paper I...

  • Modern embedded systems come with contradictory design constraints. On one hand, these systems often target mass production and battery-based devices, and therefore should be cheap and power efficient. On the other hand, they still need to show high (sometimes real-time) performance, and often support multiple applications and standards which requires high programmability.

  • This multiple-case study focuses on the practices and functions of customer reference marketing, and on the ways through which customer references can be deployed as marketing assets. The research is based on multiple-case-study methodology and the empirical findings were derived from an in-depth analysis of 38 semi-structured personal interviews with managers in four case companies operating in the fields of process and information technology.

  • Clearly, a straightforward implication of wages being determined by sectoral conditions would be that industry-level contracts offer little scope for adjustments of individual wages to firm-specific demand shocks, even if the latter are of permanent nature. However, as demonstrated in Section 2.2, industry-level contracts do not necessarily provide an obstacle to the adjustment of wages to local conditions, as recent decentralisation tendencies in Germany have introduced the option of making such wage adjustments.

  • Ensure that system and network administrators are trained and capable. Security testing must be performed by capable and trained staff. Often, individuals recruited for this task are already involved in system administration. While system administration is an increasingly complex task, the numbers of trained system administrators generally has not kept pace with the increase in computing systems.

  • This should consider that premiums reflect both the first party costs (generally damage to the driver’s own vehicle) and third party costs (generally damage to property outside of the driver’s vehicle and injury costs for people outside of the vehicle although it will, of course, include injury costs for passengers in the driver’s vehicle where the driver is at fault). These new technologies, therefore, need to be able to reduce the casualty rate and the level of severity of collisions.

  • Cross-lingual tasks are especially difficult due to the compounding effect of errors in language processing and errors in machine translation (MT). In this paper, we present an error analysis of a new cross-lingual task: the 5W task, a sentence-level understanding task which seeks to return the English 5W's (Who, What, When, Where and Why) corresponding to a Chinese sentence. We analyze systems that we developed, identifying specific problems in language processing and MT that cause errors.

  • The coincidence of multiple inequities in health—and as an interlinked concept, the multifaceted nature of poverty—make for a very complex field. Those living at the margins of society suffer numerous and overlapping inequities in health, in voice, in agency, in living conditions. Often, their poverty and ill health keep them in a life of perpetual quicksand. Just as an intervention might spare a child from malaria only to have her die a year later of measles, a policy change in the health sector might be successful in eliminating one source of inequity (e.g. access to care)...

  • It is therefore possible that the same amount of alcohol may produce a higher Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) in the elderly than younger people. Elderly car drivers are three times more likely to be involved in a motoring accident after consuming even a small amount of alcohol, than they are at a zero level of alcohol. Alcohol depresses the brain function to a greater extent in older people, impairing coordination and memory, which can lead to falls and general confusion. It can also heighten emotions leading to moodiness, irritability or even violence.

  • During 1993–2003, incidence of tuberculosis (TB) in the United States decreased 44% and is now occurring at a historic low level (14,874 cases in 2003). The Advisory Council for the Elimination of Tuberculosis has called for a renewed commitment to eliminating TB in the United States, and the Institute of Medicine has published a detailed plan for achieving that goal.

  • The disclosure table is the heart of the prototype. It addresses two of the questions: “How do we ensure that consumers can understand the information about financial sharing policies and their personal information?” and “How do we ensure that consumers can compare sharing practices across financial institutions?” At the simplest level, the disclosure table shows what the individual financial institution is sharing, especially through the yes/no columns.

  • Health effects model. To estimate exposure to the PM10 produced by our sample plants, we use population data at the survey unit level—that is, at the level of areas geoestadísticas básicas (AGEBs) in Ciudad Juárez and census tracts in El Paso. We assign the inhabitants of each survey unit a distance-weighted average of PM10 concentrations predicted by the ISCST3 model at all model receptor points within 800 meters of the survey unit centroid.

  • This paper presents a model for summarizing multiple untranscribed spoken documents. Without assuming the availability of transcripts, the model modifies a recently proposed unsupervised algorithm to detect re-occurring acoustic patterns in speech and uses them to estimate similarities between utterances, which are in turn used to identify salient utterances and remove redundancies.
