Although the EPDS is described as a screen for depression, it contains items such as “I have
been anxious or worried for no good reason”, and factor analyses of the scale have revealed
factors for depression and anxiety (Bowen, Bowen, Maslany, & Muhajarine, 2008; Swalm,
Brooks, Doherty, Nathan, & Jacques, 2010). It may be more appropriate to consider the
EPDS a measure of “distress,” the mix of depression and anxiety that so often occurs
together (Mauri et al., 2010).
