  • This paper proposes a framework for training Conditional Random Fields (CRFs) to optimize multivariate evaluation measures, including non-linear measures such as F-score. Our proposed framework is derived from an error minimization approach that provides a simple solution for directly optimizing any evaluation measure. Specifically focusing on sequential segmentation tasks, i.e. text chunking and named entity recognition, we introduce a loss function that closely reflects the target evaluation measure for these tasks, namely, segmentation F-score. ...

  • Although the EPDS is described as a screen for depression, it contains items such as “I have been anxious or worried for no good reason”, and factor analyses of the scale have revealed factors for depression and anxiety (Bowen, Bowen, Maslany, & Muhajarine, 2008; Swalm, Brooks, Doherty, Nathan, & Jacques, 2010). It may be more appropriate to consider the EPDS a measure of “distress,” the mix of depression and anxiety that so often occurs together (Mauri et al., 2010).

  • Principal component analysis (PCA) and the closely related Karhunen-Lo` ve transe form, or the Hotelling transform, are classic techniques in statistical data analysis, feature extraction, and data compression, stemming from the early work of Pearson [364]. Given a set of multivariate measurements, the purpose is to find a smaller set of variables with less redundancy, that would give as good a representation as possible.

Given a set of multivariate measurements, the purpose is to find a smaller set of variables with less redundancy, that would give as good a representation as possible. This goal is related to the goal of independent component analysis (ICA).

  • The International Biological Programme (IPB), a world-wide plan of coordinated research on the biological basis of productivity and human welfare, covered terrestrial and aquatic environments, and ran for almost a decade from 1964. Recognising the need for guidance in methodology, the IBP arranged for the publication of a series of handbooks on techniques with the aim of achieving comparability of results all over theworld. One of these handbooks dealt with the study of marine benthos.

  • Bivariate and multivariate analyses were done to measure the effects of the interventions. Knowledge of HIV/AIDS increased in the intervention sites compared to the control sites, with greater improvement in Site B with the additional school-based intervention. The knowledge of contraceptives improved in both intervention and control sites, with the greatest improvement seen in Site A.
