Doubtless much of fancy has been added, in all the ensuing years, to the facts of Cecilia's life and death. Let us, however, take the legend as it stands. With the help of this empirical material, we can identify the social practices and mechanisms through which the social positions of these figures were supported and their differences legitimized.

  • This examination of some of the compositions produced by Villa-Lobos over the 1910s reveals his desire to take a stance in relation to Rio de Janeiro’s classical musicians. To be accepted by his peers, he had to abide by the aesthetic rules of the classical music scene in the city. This included moving away from popular music: it is striking that, in the body of work composed by Villa-Lobos during the 1910s, there is an almost complete absence of aesthetic elements linked to popular music, despite the composer’s contact with the chorões.

  • Dominique Russell argues that film music currently exists within a changing “soundscape,” whereby “there has been a change in our sound envi- ronment through the proliferation of ‘private sound bubbles, ’ created through compact music players. Headphone technology creates private soundtracks to common images.... Insulated from room tone and ambient noises, two head- phone wearers become spectators to two very different scenes, depending on what they are listening to.

  • Works of art inspired by ancient Greek sculpture often took on new forms and meanings in the Roman home. In Greece, monumental statues of gods and goddesses were placed in sanctuaries and public spaces, but in villas and houses around the Bay of Naples, formerly public art became private and, often, decorative and functional pieces. For example, a sculpture of Apollo, the god of learning and music, was made to hold a tray and placed in a Pompeian home.
