  • This book is an exploration of the evolutionary process of natural hybridization. My motivation for writing this book comes from the view that crosses between genetically divergent individuals have a major influence on the evolution of some plant and animal species complexes. In particular, I want to examine the role that natural hybridization has as a creative force in organismal evolution. I realize that my emphasis on the "creative" aspect of natural hybridization could lead some to conclude that I believe that this is the only possible outcome from hybridization and gene exchange....

  • Simply put, this book is about how nature is ‘done’, how it is practised, how it materializes as an active partner in and through those practices. Perhaps, unlike many other volumes, I am not especially concerned here with how nature is imagined, represented, thought or conceived. Rather, imagining, representing and thinking are treated as activities which take their place alongside many other practices (like growing, infecting, digging, counting), some of which do not have people at their centre. This last point is crucial.

  • This hybrid system participated in the 1993 ATIS natural language evaluation. Although only four months old, the scores achieved by the combined system were quite respectable. Because of differences between language understanding and speech recognition, significant changes are required in the hidden Markov model methodology. Unlike speech, where each phoneme results in a local sequence of spectra, the relation between the meaning of a sentence and the sequence of words is not a simple linear sequential model. ...

  • In this paper, we address statistical machine translation of public conference talks. Modeling the style of this genre can be very challenging given the shortage of available in-domain training data. We investigate the use of a hybrid LM, where infrequent words are mapped into classes. Hybrid LMs are used to complement word-based LMs with statistics about the language style of the talks. Extensive experiments comparing different settings of the hybrid LM are reported on publicly available benchmarks based on TED talks, from Arabic to English and from English to French.

  • In recent years, research in natural language processing has increasingly focused on normalizing SMS messages. Different well-defined approaches have been proposed, but the problem remains far from being solved: best systems achieve a 11% Word Error Rate. This paper presents a method that shares similarities with both spell checking and machine translation approaches. The normalization part of the system is entirely based on models trained from a corpus. Evaluated in French by 10-fold-cross validation, the system achieves a 9.3% Word Error Rate and a 0.83 BLEU score. ...

  • In BBN's natural language understanding and generation system (Janus), we have used a hybrid approach to representation, employing an intensional logic for the representation of the semantics of utterances and a taxonomic language with formal semantics for specification of descriptive constants and axioms relating them. Remarkably, 99.9% of 7,000 vocabulary items in our natural language applications could be adequately axiomatlzed in the taxonomic language.

  • When fuel cells were first suggested and discussed back in the nineteenth century, it was firmly hoped that distinctly higher efficiencies could be attained with them when converting the chemical energy of natural fuels to electric power. Now that the world supply of fossil fuels is seen to be finite, this hope turns into a need, into a question of maintaining advanced standards of life.

  • Road traffic is one of the major consumers of energy, particularly in western industrialized countries, and globally it exhibits the highest growth rate in energy consumption of all sectors. In the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries, more than 33% of the total final energy consumption goes into the transportation sector, amounting to more than 11% of the world’s total primary energy consumed.

Goal of this book is to bring closer to the readers new drive technologies that are intended to environment and nature protection. The book presents modern technique achievements and technologies applied in the implementation of electric vehicles. Special attention was paid to energy efficiency of EV's. Also today's trends, mathematical models and computer design elements of future cars are presented....

  • The pricing of credit-sensitive bonds, that is, bonds which have a significant probability of default, is an issue of increasing academic and practical importance. The recent practice in financial markets has been to issue high yield corporate bonds that are a hybrid of equity and risk-free debt. Also, to an extent, most corporate bonds are credit-sensitive instruments, simply because of the limited liability of the issuing enterprise. In this paper, we suggest and implement a model for the pricing of options on credit-sensitive bonds.

  • Syngenta Seeds’ Gary Wietgrefe points out several of the impediments to widespread adoption of HTF corn (Ed Zdrojewski in BioFuels Journal, 2003b). To begin with, starch and ethanol yield vary by geographic region and from year to year, making an optimizing hybrid choice difficult. Further, choosing a hybrid that maximizes ethanol qualities may mean a tradeoff with yield and other potentially valuable qualities, such as protein content and even test weight (because of moisture). Testing equipment pres- ents its own challenges.

  • Kernel based methods dominate the current trend for various relation extraction tasks including protein-protein interaction (PPI) extraction. PPI information is critical in understanding biological processes. Despite considerable efforts, previously reported PPI extraction results show that none of the approaches already known in the literature is consistently better than other approaches when evaluated on different benchmark PPI corpora.

  • This paper discusses the application of a previously reported theory of explanation rhetoric (Maybury, 1988b) to the task of explaining constraint violations in a hybrid rule/frame based system for resource allocation (Dawson et al, 1987). This research illustrates how discourse strategies of explanation, textual connectives, and additional justification knowledge can be applied to enhance the cohesiveness, structure, and clarity of knowledge based system explanations.

  • Most question answering (QA) and information retrieval (IR) systems are insensitive to different users’ needs and preferences, and also to the existence of multiple, complex or controversial answers. We introduce adaptivity in QA and IR by creating a hybrid system based on a dialogue interface and a user model. Keywords: question answering, information retrieval, user modelling, dialogue interfaces.
