  • The rapidly increasing global population has dramatically increased the demands for natural resources and has caused significant changes in quantity and quality of natural resources. To achieve sustainable resource management, it is essential to obtain insight- ful guidance from emerging disciplines such as landscape ecology. This text addresses the links between landscape ecology and natural resource management. These links are discussed in the context of various landscape types,a diverse set of resources, and a wide range ofmanagement issues.

  • We propose a new specifically designed method for paraphrase generation based on Monte-Carlo sampling and show how this algorithm is suitable for its task. Moreover, the basic algorithm presented here leaves a lot of opportunities for future improvement. In particular, our algorithm does not constraint the scoring function in opposite to Viterbi based decoders. It is now possible to use some global features in paraphrase scoring functions. This algorithm opens new outlooks for paraphrase generation and other natural language processing applications like statistical machine translation.

  • The Natural Language Understanding Engine Test Environment (ETE) is a GUI software tool that aids in the development and maintenance of large, modular, natural language understanding (NLU) systems. Natural language understanding systems are composed of modules (such as partof-speech taggers, parsers and semantic analyzers) which are difficult to test individually because of the complexity of their output data structures.

  • It is necessary to have a (large) annotated corpus to build a statistical parser. Acquisition of such a corpus is costly and time-consuming. This paper presents a method to reduce this demand using active learning, which selects what samples to annotate, instead of annotating blindly the whole training corpus. Sample selection for annotation is based upon “representativeness” and “usefulness”. A model-based distance is proposed to measure the difference of two sentences and their most likely parse trees.

  • Most current statistical natural language processing models use only local features so as to permit dynamic programming in inference, but this makes them unable to fully account for the long distance structure that is prevalent in language use. We show how to solve this dilemma with Gibbs sampling, a simple Monte Carlo method used to perform approximate inference in factored probabilistic models.

  • In this paper, we describe experiments conducted on identifying a person using a novel unique correlated corpus of text and audio samples of the person’s communication in six genres. The text samples include essays, emails, blogs, and chat. Audio samples were collected from individual interviews and group discussions and then transcribed to text. For each genre, samples were collected for six topics.

  • With respect to the sampling of tomato it occurred at the beginning, on the highest peak and at the end of the production stage of tomato. For each sampling unit a zigzag path by the crop was followed, harvesting a tomato every three places along the zig-zag, and then based on a quartering system, obtaining a sample of 1 kg per plot.

  • (USGS) is to assess the quantity and quality of the natural resources of the Nation and to provide information that will assist resource managers and policymakers at Federal, State, and local levels in making sound decisions. Assessment of water-quality conditions and trends is an important part of this overall mission. One of the greatest challenges faced by waterresources scientists is acquiring reliable information that will guide the use and protection of the Nation’s water resources.

  • Some flow cytometers have the ability to physically separate different sub-populations of interest (cell sorting) depending on their cytometric characteristics (stream-in-air), thus permitting the recovery and purification of cell subsets from a mixed population for further applications (Bergquist et al., 2009; Davey, 2010).

  • The aim of the study was to investigate the crystallization kinetics and solidification behaviour of Fe60Co8Mo5Zr10W2B15 bulk glass forming alloy. The solidification behaviour in near-equilibrium and non-equilibrium cooling conditions was studied. The eutectic and peritectic reactions were found to exist in the solidification sequence of the alloy. The bulk metallic glass formation was achieved by using two methods: quenching from the liquid state and quenching from the semi-state.

  • This study investigated young female consumers' beauty product shopping behavioural patterns, their perceived importance of product attributes, and their attitude towards and purchase of natural beauty products. This study also examines whether consumers' product attitudes and shopping behaviours are influenced by their health and environmental consciousness. Data were collected from a convenience sample of 210 female college students enrolled at a south-eastern university in the US.

  • GNU/Linux has taken the world of computers by storm. At one time, personal computer users were forced to choose among proprietary operating environments and applications. Users had no way of fixing or improving these programs, could not look “under the hood,” and were often forced to accept restrictive licenses. GNU/Linux and other open source systems have changed that—now PC users, administrators, and developers can choose a free operating environment complete with tools, applications, and full source code.

  • We should now develop some intuition before we take up the rigorous development in the next section. The elements ω ∈ Ω are the possible states of nature and one among them, say δ, is the true state of nature. The true state of nature is unknown and controls the outcome of all random experiments. An event A ∈ F occurs or does not occur according as δ ∈ A or δ ∈ A, that is, according as the random variable 1A assumes the value one or zero at δ. To gain information about the true state of nature we determine by means of experiments whether...

  • The objective of this thesis was to study the interactions of microbial activity, biocide usage and creation, and chemical changes in the papermaking process. The main focus was on oxidative biocide systems. In addition, new measurement and biocide production methods were applied to papermaking, and evaluated for the monitoring and control of the microbiological state and biocide usage. The measurement methods were based on portable handheld online equipments whereas the biocide production was based on electrochemical generation of biocides.

  • Electrophoresis is defined as the transport of electrically charged particles in a direct current electric field. Electrophoretic separation is based on differential rates of migration in the bulk of the liquid phase and is not concerned with reactions occurring at the electrodes. In the early days, electrophoresis was carried out either in free solution or in the supporting media such as paper, cellulose acetate, starch, agarose, and polyacry lamide gel.
