  • This book, now in its third edition, began almost 25 years ago when Weed Ecology: Implications for Vegetation Management was published in 1984. That text concentrated on the need for farmers, foresters, rangeland managers, and the researchers who advised them to understand better the biology of weeds and the role people play in creating and maintaining weeds in agriculture and other production systems. We were assisted in that first effort by the writings of many early scientists, such as J. L. Harper, H. G. Baker, and E. J.

  • In this paper we present the implementation of a digital lock-in amplifier (LIA) completely based on Labview with a general-purpose data acquisition board (or a high quality sound card) and a high-gain low-noise amplifier. The signal analysis is processed by the software. We describe some characteristics of the LIA including output voltage vs. frequency and output phase vs. noise. The LIA can be used to measure the small signals, even in presence of broadband noise which is several times greater than the signal itself. Since the signal processing takes place on the computer, ...

  • Thermal expansion property of three-phase fiber composite material reinforced by spherical particles is one of important properties of this material. In this paper, we would like to propose a way in order to determine thermal expansion coefficients of three-phase composite reinferced by fibres and spherical particles. Keywords: thermal expansion coefficients, three-phase composite material, aligned fibres, spherical particles, effective matrix phase.

  • Today, nano composite material is being studied and widely used for defence security and economic development. Keeping researching on the mechanic of three-phases nano composite in which two-phases is grains of pad and the structure of one-phase in reinforced two-phases is a nano structure, basing on consideration for interaction of the polyme matrix and grains of padding, we have defined engineering constants of the three-phases polyme composite nano material.

  • Four hundred years ago, the Universe changed. Or, at least, our perception of it did, thanks to Galileo Galilei’s scrutiny of the night sky with a telescope. Within a couple of years, his observations of the Moon, phases of Venus and satellites of Jupiter shattered the old Ptolemaic model of our Solar System. To the church’s dismay, Earth assumed its rightful place as one of several planets orbiting the Sun (see page 28). Marking Galileo’s anniversary, the International Year of Astronomy seeks to remind us of the humbling nature of gazing at the heavens.

  • Some people make physical chemistry sound more confusing than it really is. One of their best tricks is to define it inaccurately, saying it is ‘the physics of chemicals’. This definition is sometimes quite good, since it suggests we look at a chemical system and ascertain how it follows the laws of nature. This is true, but it suggests that chemistry is merely a sub-branch of physics; and the notoriously mathematical nature of physics impels us to avoid this otherwise useful way of looking at physical chemistry....

  • Defining the various tasks required of GDHit was essential before any visual brainstorming was approached. These tasks, once defined, helped clarify perceptions of layout and functionality. The main function of the timeline is to search content chronologically (span a set number of years), filter content (through the classification of various categories), read content (the most important single function of the timeline) and filter contextually rather than linearly (by filtering content through the Tags).

  • Choice of Stationary Phase Ideally for a reversed-phase separations, the retention factors (k) for all com- ponents in a sample should lie between 1 and 10 to achieve separation in a reasonable time. For a given stationary phase the k of a particular component can be controlled by changing the solvent composition of the mobile phase. However, the impact of eluent composition will depend on the type of sta- tionary phase and the nature of the components in the mixture.

  • Food can be defined as the nutritive material taken into an organism for growth, work, or repair and for maintaining the vital processes. Food sustains life, and, as such, many individuals view food as an uncomplicated, pure source of nutrition. Therefore, such individuals are often bewildered to learn that food is comprised of an array of natural chemicals, and not all the chemicals are nutrients or enhance nutritive value, but in fact may decrease nutritional value or, worse still, are toxic (e.g., naturally occurring toxicants).

  • The aim of the study was to investigate the crystallization kinetics and solidification behaviour of Fe60Co8Mo5Zr10W2B15 bulk glass forming alloy. The solidification behaviour in near-equilibrium and non-equilibrium cooling conditions was studied. The eutectic and peritectic reactions were found to exist in the solidification sequence of the alloy. The bulk metallic glass formation was achieved by using two methods: quenching from the liquid state and quenching from the semi-state.

  • For many classically chaotic systems it is believed that the quantum wave functions become uniformly distributed, that is the matrix elements of smooth observables tend to the phase space average of the observable. In this paper we study the fluctuations of the matrix elements for the desymmetrized quantum cat map. We present a conjecture for the distribution of the normalized matrix elements, namely that their distribution is that of a certain weighted sum of traces of independent matrices in SU(2).

  • We study random surfaces which arise as height functions of random perfect matchings (a.k.a. dimer configurations) on a weighted, bipartite, doubly periodic graph G embedded in the plane. We derive explicit formulas for the surface tension and local Gibbs measure probabilities of these models. The answers involve a certain plane algebraic curve, which is the spectral curve of the Kasteleyn operator of the graph. For example, the surface tension is the Legendre dual of the Ronkin function of the spectral curve.

  • This paper is about a class of strange attractors that have the dual property of occurring naturally and being amenable to analysis. Roughly speaking, a rank one attractor is an attractor that has some instability in one direction and strong contraction in m−1 directions, m here being the dimension of the phase space. The results of this paper can be summarized as follows. Among all maps with rank one attractors, we identify, inductively, subsets Gn, n = 1, 2, 3, · · · ,

In the second stage, the analysis of familiar- ity, prototypicality and meaning is performed, together with the implicit and automatic integration of information with pre-exist- ing memory structures. Processes involved in explicit classification are performed in the third phase, including those related with the style and the content of the stimulus.

  • The Environment Agency plays a central role in managing flood risk from rivers and the sea. We have the strategic overview role for flood risk management from all causes of flooding, including rivers, the sea, groundwater, reservoirs and surface water. This report explains how we tackle the risk of flooding in England, looking mainly at flooding from rivers and the sea. Flooding is a part of nature. It is neither technically feasible nor economically affordable to prevent all properties from flooding.
