  • During the past two decades, China’s GDP has increased by 6.3 times. This achievement, however, has given rise to problems of net energy imports, environmental pollution and ecological destruction at home, cross-border pollution, and mounting carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Looking at the future, the Chinese government set up a target of quadrupling the size of its GDP in 2000 by the year 2020.

  • Petri Nets are graphical and mathematical tool used in many different science domains. Their characteristic features are the intuitive graphical modeling language and advanced formal analysis method. The concurrence of performed actions is the natural phenomenon due to which Petri Nets are perceived as mathematical tool for modeling concurrent systems. The nets whose model was extended with the time model can be applied in modeling real-time systems.

  • Brewer, Minton, and Moser (2000), we evaluate an equation relating the determinants of C&I lending and the impact of derivatives on C&I lending activity. The major finding in this study is that the interest-rate derivatives allow commercial banks to lessen their systematic exposure to changes in interest rates, which enables banks to increase their lending activities without increasing the total risk level faced by the banks. This consequently increases the banks’ abilities to provide more intermediation services.

  • We find that portfolios in which funds are weighted by their money inf lows outperform portfolios in which funds are weighted by TNA: New money beats oldmoney. We also find that high net f low funds outperformlow net f low funds. Thus, within the universe of actively managed funds, new investors tend to choose the better ones: Money is smart. This result holds for both individual and institutional investors, and is driven by investors’ fund buys rather than sells. The smart money effect is not explained by the Chen et al.

  • The goal of the first edition of this textbook was to present a comprehensive engineering basis for photovoltaic (PV) system design, so the engineer would understand the what, the why and the how associated with electrical, mechanical, economic and aesthetic aspects of PV system design. The first edition was intended to educate the engineer in the design of PV systems so that when engineering judgment was needed, the engineer would be able to make intelligent decisions based upon a clear understanding of the parameters involved.

  • Wireless cellular networks are an integral part of modern telecommunication systems. Today it is hard to imagine our life without the use of such networks. Nevertheless, the development, implementation and operation of these networks require engineers and scientists to address a number of interrelated problems.

  • Already about two decades ago, Robert Lucas (1990) asked: “Why Doesn’t Capital Flow from Rich to Poor Countries?”, wondering why only very little capital in net term was flowing from the industrial world to developing economies. In the past years, this trend has even aggravated: Nowadays, in many cases, net capital flows have reversed and are now flowing from developing and emerging countries towards the rich world, especially towards the United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Spain.

  • As new technologies emerge, the Federal government has a responsibility to lead by example. Our government owns and manages approximately 500,000 buildings and operates more than 600,000 fleet vehicles. The electricity used for its buildings, the fuel used in its cars and trucks, and the energy required in military operations make it the largest energy consumer in the US economy.

  • Relevant floor plans can be generated before planning the layout of furniture pieces. Recently, Merrell et al. [2010] proposed a data- driven method to generate residential building layouts. In their work, 120 examples of architectural programs are used to train a Bayesian network that captures the relationships among different rooms. Given certain user requirements as priors, the Bayesian net- work can then be used to generate a floor plan, which is iteratively modified to incorporate desirable human factors. The result is a synthesized floor plan for a residential building.

  • Since a falling apple around 1665 worked its magic in the imaginative mind of a youthful farmer at Woolsthorpe in Lincolnshire, the meaning of the word action and of the equal and opposite reaction, has been investigated in science and technology. More than 300 years ago this irreversible process had consequences that led to the development of a theory of gravitation still used by space agencies even today.

  • The tension structures discussed in this book are predominantly roofing forms created from pre-stressed cable nets, cable trusses, and continuous membranes (fabric structures). A unique feature in their design is form-finding an interactive process of defining the shape of a structure under tension. The book discusses the role of stable minimal surfaces (minimum energy forms occurring in natural objects, such as soap films) in finding optimal shapes of membrane and cable structures.
