  • The rate of technological progress is encouraging increasingly sophisticated lines of enquiry in cognitive neuroscience and shows no sign of slowing down in the foreseeable future. Nevertheless, it is unlikely that even the strongest advocates of the cognitive neuroscience approach would maintain that advances in cognitive theory have kept in step with methods-based developments. There are several candidate reasons for the failure of neuroimaging studies to convincingly resolve many of the most important theoretical debates in the literature.

  • Modern neuroimaging tools allow unprecedented opportunities for understanding brain neuroanatomy and function in health and disease. Each available technique carries with it a particular balance of strengths and limitations, such that converging evidence based on multiple methods provides the most powerful approach for advancing our knowledge in the fields of clinical and cognitive neuroscience. In addition to offering fine-grained in-vivo neuroanatomical specification, neuroimaging methods also provide the opportunity to non-invasively explore brain function.

  • Neuroimaging technology has progressed considerably during recent decades. Neuroimaging studies can be an invaluable part of the diagnostic workup of psychiatric patients. However, it can be difficult to determine which clinical situations call for the use of neuroimaging studies and which do not. In addition, it is often unclear what type of neuroimaging study should be ordered.

  • While history and examination will always remain the foundation of neurolog- ical diagnosis, MRI and CT have now become the most important diagnostic tests used by neurologists and neurosurgeons. These tests are critical not only for confirming clinical diagnosis, but in many cases will give additional infor- mation absolutely essential to patient care. Modern clinical diagnosis and treat- ment of central nervous system disorders relies heavily upon neuroimaging. In some cases, the optimal management of clinical problems affecting patients with brain tumors, strokes, etc.

  • Not Otherwise Specified [NOS]). We also review functional brain imaging studies of patients with various forms of conversion disorder (e.g. psychogenic motor or sensory changes, psychogenic blindness, pseudoseizures) as well as depersonalization disorder. As hypnotizability traits have been postulated to be associated with a higher tendency for developing dissociative symptoms, we briefly refer to functional imaging studies of hypnosis.

  • Several of the conference’s participants presented the results of fMRI studies of participants performing aesthetic appreciation tasks. As in other areas of neuroscience, however, blobs of signifi- cant BOLD response tell us little unless one really understands their relation to the cognitive and affective processes involved in the specific task.

  • The second shift is methodological in nature. Until recently only two strategies were available for studying the biological mecha- nisms underlying artistic appreciation and creation: first, making theoretical conjectures based on general understanding of brain structure and function; and second, single case-studies of brain injuries affecting art-related activities. The former produced theo- ries that often went untested (and were sometimes untestable), while the latter generated accounts that were often anecdotal, incomplete and difficult to interpret.

  • This is a watershed moment in the field of neuroimaging. At least three emerging trends have been slowly reframing the field for the last five years. Each one of these trends intersects with a foundational issue in human brain mapping, affecting the measurement or methodological or theoretical nature of the overall field. First are methodological problems that have arisen concerning nonindependence of samples—in effect the lack of cross-validation procedures applied in the field, especially in social neuroscience (SN).
