  • This sentiment was well expressed by Charcot in one of his many teaching sessions on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It holds as true today as it did in 1865 and the search must continue but progress has been incredible in recent years. There has been an exponential increase in the number of publications dealing with ALS and motor neuron diseases in the last 50 years, as evidenced by listings in PubMed and related data bases. The Editors extend their utmost thanks to the internationally renowned experts that have contributed to this volume.

  • The neurons of the corpus striatum receive an excitatory input from the cerebral cortex and the thalamus. The major outputs project to the globus pallidus and the substantia nigra pars reticula (SNr), and use gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) as a transmitter. Major efferent pathways from the globus pallidus interna and the SNr project to the thalamus. Feedback to the striatum is through the dopaminergic striatonigral pathway originating in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc; Figure 1). These separate pathways utilize different neuropeptides and dopamine receptors.

  • Think of the most complicated aspect of our universe, and then multiply that by infinity! Even the most enthusiastic of mathematicians and physicists acknowledge that the brain is by far the most challenging entity to understand. By design, the human brain is made up of billions of cells called neurons, which use chemical neurotransmitters to communicate with each other through connections called synapses. Each brain cell has about 2,000 synapses.

  • Although a general understanding persists that the human brain functions similarly in women and in men, an increasing body of knowledge indicates that neuronal connectivity, recruitment, and disease patterns exhibit gender differences. Imaging techniques such as positron emission computerized tomography (PET) and single photon emission computerized tomography (SPECT) have highlighted some gender-based differences in human brain function.

  • "This book is a timely collection of reviews of fundamental processes in the compartments and chemical components of the cerebral micro-environments...its contents prove rewarding reading for the neuroclinician." - Clinical Neurology and Neurosurgery "The book targets researchers, graduate students, and educators who face constant challenges on how to modify the external environment of a specific neuron in order to obtain specific behavioral results. The author is a credible authority on the subject but I think the scope of the book has an audience beyond that proposed by the author.

  • Abstract Although gait change is considered a useful indicator of severity in animal models of Parkinson's disease, systematic and extensive gait analysis in animal models of neurological deficits is not well established. The CatWalk-assisted automated gait analysis system provides a comprehensive way to assess a number of dynamic and static gait parameters simultaneously. In this study, we used the Catwalk system to investigate changes in gait parameters in adult rats with unilateral 6-OHDA-induced lesions and the...

  • Allergic diseases are an adverse reaction of the immune system against otherwise innocuous substances and are characterized by their high complexity. Patients can be asymptomatic or their involvement could be as severe as asthma. The complex nature of the phenotypes involved seems to point to genetic and environmental factors implication. Familiar aggregation or genetic implication in the development of these diseases is well reported, and experts seem to agree that atopic diseases affect homozygotic twins more than dizigotic twins (Ownby, 1990, Duffy et al., 1990)....

  • Advances in the diagnosis, prevention, treatment and cure of neurological diseases are based upon scientific discovery. The journey from discovery to treatment is often arduous and involves both basic and clinical science. Over the ages, multiple intertwined paths of discovery connect the recognition of distinct diseases of the nervous system to exquisite diagnostic descriptions, which, when coupled with the scientific understanding of the disease, have allowed the development of effective treatments and interventions...
