For the first time since the design of the first nuclear submarine, the U.S. Navy has no nuclear submarine design program under way, which raises the possibility that design capability could be lost. Such a loss could result in higher costs and delays when the next submarine design is undertaken, as well as risks to system

Chapter 9 - Ethics, corporate social responsibility, environmental sustainability, and strategy. After studying this chapter you will be able to: understand how the standards of ethical behavior in business are no different from the ethical standards and norms of the larger society and culture in which a company operates, recognize conditions that can give rise to unethical business strategies and behavior, gain an understanding of the costs of business ethics failures.
There’s no question among business advisors: When you’re establishing,
expanding, or reenergizing a business, the best way to start is by writing
a business plan. The task may seem a little daunting, which is why we bring
this kit to the rescue.
Business Plans Kit For Dummies, 2nd Edition, doesn’t tell you how to proceed;
it shows you how, walking you through the process with step-by-step action
plans, examples, and do-it-yourself forms throughout the book and on the
information-packed CD-ROM. So relax.
I wrote this book for you as a manager, someone who is the
steward of any organization, be it large or small. The concepts of
business apply no matter whether you are an entrepreneur or a
manager for a well-established, publicly traded company.
Companies are organizations, no matter what their size, type, or
product. This means you must have an integrated business plan no
matter who you are or what you do. Business planning is important
whether you are a start-up company in e-business or working on a
multinational planning team.
You could be a manager fresh out of the box or one that has been in the trenches for years. No matter. Understanding the project management life cycle is invaluable for successfully guiding your project from its initial stages to completion.
It is a pleasure to announce the establishment of the Foundation
Series in Business Marketing. This book series fills a critical void in
business-to-business marketing knowledge especially when no resources
currently available address the needs of business marketing
practitioners and academics looking for breadth and depth of coverage
on various issues of research, practice, and education. Books
published in this series will foster our understanding of business marketing
phenomena and managerial practice around the globe.
ost of the problems of analyzing survey data have been reasonably well handled, except those revolving around the existence of interaction effects. Indeed, increased efficiency in handling multivariate analyses even with non-numerical variables, has been achieved largely by assuming additivity. An approach to survey data is proposed which imposes no restrictions on interaction effects, focuses on importance in reducing predictive error, operates sequentially, and is independent of the extent of linearity in the classifications or the order in which the explanatory factors are introduced...

Tourism is big business and getting bigger. In the 20 years from1980 to 2000
global tourism receipts increased at an annual rate of nearly 8 per cent,
much faster than the rate of world economic growth of around 3 per cent.
In 2000, income from tourism combined with passenger transport totaled
more than $575 billion, making this sector the world number one export
earner, ahead of automotive production, chemicals, petroleum and food

One of the consequences of raising children in this world is that they
make you think a lot more about the future. Because of the storms
brewing in China, the future our children now face appears to be, at
best, highly uncertain. At worst, it could be one that the philosopher
Thomas Hobbes might describe as “nasty” and “brutish”—if no
Planning is a feature of everyday living - whether at home or in business.
Without it our lives would be totally chaotic and random.
Plans vary from imprecise vague statements to thick volumes prepared over a
Some are useful; others a waste of time. Very few remain unaltered.
People are frequently asked to prepare a plan with no guidance at all, and the
result often falls short of expectations.
Whether you’re a CEO now or on your way to becoming one, you
want to be a good one. No, a great one! That’s wonderful. That’s
what is needed in the businessworld. Your employees, customers, investors,
community, and competitors will demand it. But most importantly
you want to be the best because that’s the kind of person
you are. Like California winemaker, Robert Mondavi says, “Even
when I played marbles as a child, I wanted to be the best.”
G reat People Decisions will help you improve your personal competence
at hiring and promoting great people.
Literally, nothing is more important. For almost every manager, personal
success grows directly out of the ability to choose the right people
for his or her team.
But making key appointments is hard. Few people get any formal
training in this all-important activity, and no comprehensive tools exist
to make up for that lack of training.
If you were asked to define the term project, what words would come to mind? Time? Resources (or lack of)?
One-of-a-kind effort? Deliverables or products? Complex? No authority over other groups? Budget?
A project is a unique effort to introduce or produce a new product or service conforming to certain
specifications and applicable standards. This effort is completed within the project parameters including fixed
time, cost, human resources, and asset limits.
This book is the outcome of a comparative survey in China and Vietnam. Until
now there has been no such study concerning itself with entrepreneurial strata
and the private sector in both those countries. What is more, comparisons of the
current developments in the two countries are rare. This study is based on the
results of a research project that was supported between 1996 and 1998 by the
Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation).

different. Accordingly, we would especially like to thank Dr. Don Cole,
president of the Organization Development Institute, for his support of this
project. Although he did not see the many drafts of this work, he was supportive
of it. It was his original idea to define the knowledge and skill necessary for
competence in OD.
