  • In this paper we propose a competition learning approach to coreference resolution. Traditionally, supervised machine learning approaches adopt the singlecandidate model. Nevertheless the preference relationship between the antecedent candidates cannot be determined accurately in this model. By contrast, our approach adopts a twin-candidate learning model. Such a model can present the competition criterion for antecedent candidates reliably, and ensure that the most preferred candidate is selected.

  • The developed technique involves contrast enhancement using sequentially iterative smoothing filters, histogram equalization, and simultaneous application of two types of edge detection processes namely, maximum-difference edge detection [3] and Canny’s edge detection [4]. The post processed image is combined with the original image to accentuate the edges while eliminating noise. Smoothing is implemented because of its effect to reduce specific types of noise signals in the digitized image.

  • We address the task of unsupervised topic segmentation of speech data operating over raw acoustic information. In contrast to existing algorithms for topic segmentation of speech, our approach does not require input transcripts. Our method predicts topic changes by analyzing the distribution of reoccurring acoustic patterns in the speech signal corresponding to a single speaker.
