ON DECEMBER 7, 1940, DURING THE SEASON FINALE AT SOUTHERN
California, Notre Dame coach Elmer Layden charged onto the
field to protest what he felt was a rotten call. But Layden didn’t
stop there. After blistering the refs, he screamed at USC coach
A normally genial man, Layden had finally submitted to the
abnormal pressure of coaching Notre Dame football. This pressure
had increased for nine straight years—ever since March 31, 1931,
the stunning day Knute Rockne died in an airplane crash....
Whilst some men with a PSA below the currently accepted “normal” age-specific threshold
will have prostate cancer, it is also true that many men with a PSA above this threshold will
not have prostate cancer as an elevated PSA can be attributable to a number of benign
conditions as well apart from the presence of prostate cancer. Considerable efforts have been
made to improve the sensitivity and specificity of PSA testing including the adoption of
free-to-total PSA ratios, %free PSA, [-2]pro-PSA, PSA density and PSA velocity.
The 8th International Congress of Ecology was held in Seoul, South Korea in
August 2002, and was hosted by the Ecological Society of Korea. The Congress
theme was 'Ecological Issues in a Changing World', and this volume includes
selected contributions to illustrate some of the important topics which were
discussed during the Congress.
Problems of scale have exercised the minds of ecologists for many years, and
will continue to do so into the future. This volume deals with this subject and with
mathematical approaches to improve our understanding of complex ecological
The history of sleep medicine and sleep research can be
summarized as a history of remarkable progress and, at
the same time, a history of remarkable ignorance. Since
the publication of the second edition in 1999 enormous
progress has been made in all aspects of sleep science
and sleep medicine. I am pleased to see these rapid
advances in sleep medicine and growing awareness about
the importance of sleep and its dysfunction amongst the
public and the profession.
PET-CT: A Case-Based Approach provides practical clinical examples of studies performed
with FDG on a state-of-the-art dedicated PET-CT device. Detailed histories
and correlative imaging findings are given in each case to demonstrate the level of
detail required for image interpretation and the capabilities of this instrumentation.
This back-and-forth iteration in building a model is like sculpting: you are chipping
away a little bit here, and a little bit there, hoping to nd what's really inside that stubborn
block of marble. I choose the analogy with sculpting purposely: like sculpture most of the
work in building a model doesn't consist of adding things, it consists of subtracting them.
This is the most fun part of modeling, and it can be very exciting when the form of the
idea really begins to take shape. I normally walk around in a bit of a daze at this stage;
and I try not to get too...
The period from the date of mobilisation to the date on which we began our active service experiences we
propose to pass over quickly, as the events which happened then seem now of small interest to those coming
With orders prepared carefully in peace time, mobilisation went smoothly. The Normal School, Glasgow,
became a barracks and a place for the busy public of the New City Road to gaze at with interest.
Within a week our Brigade found itself at Dunfermline, and a few days later we were at Leven, with two
companies on duty at the docks at Methil.

Many environmental books begin with a desperate attempt to convince
us that we are either not sufficiently aware of the problems facing us
or are not acting effectively to correct them. This one takes a different
approach. I presume that everyone who picks up this book is doing so
because they are searching for a better path, away from the problems
and also from the habits of thinking that make those problems so
intractable in the first place. You would be unlikely to turn to this book
if you thought all was well....
The project is of two year’s duration and is supported by
the Leonardo programme, an EU education programme. The project

The aim of the project is to make teaching with animation an
integrated part of the European school system along with the more
traditional ways of teaching. The inclusion of animation will provide
more variety in the teaching methods and in that way promote
different types of learning.
Apart from the doubtful quality of many of the new issues, an important case
which shook the markets in early 1995 was the Rs. 350 crore Fully Convertible
Debentures (FCD) issue of M.S. Shoes. The company was accused of inadequate
disclosures. Taking advantage of free pricing of issues, many companies charged
high premium. But the post-listing returns proved to be disappointing. In the post-
liberalisation period a good number of companies were not only non-manufacturing
ones, but the purpose of issue also varied from project finance to working capital.
Children also need to know that Parkinson’s is not
contagious. They can’t catch it like they can get a cold
or the chicken pox. Older children also may be worried
that, since they’re related to you, they will contract the
disease themselves eventually. But with today’s
research leading in the direction of predisposition
combined with environmental factors, you can com-
fortably reassure them that is not likely to happen.
As unlikely as it sounds to an adult, young children
may need to be told that it’s not their fault a parent
This sketch and record were written at the suggestion and by the request of the surviving members of the
Company. It was their desire to have a brief story of their marches, battles and sieges, and, especially, an
accurate record of each member, to preserve for reference in future years. If this little publication will serve
that purpose, the object of the author is fully accomplished.
The Voice of America has been broadcasting programs in
Special English since 1959. Special English is VOA’s method
of communicating with English learners around the world
in a way that is easy to understand. The vocabulary is
limited to about 1,500 words. The sentences are short.
The speed is slower than normal.
Special English programs are broadcast on the Voice of
America, on radio stations around the world, on satellite
television and on the Internet.
Tribology in a traditional form has been in existence since the beginning of recorded history.
There are many well documented examples of how early civilizations developed bearings
and low friction surfaces . The scientific study of tribology also has a long history, and
many of the basic laws of friction, such as the proportionality between normal force and
limiting friction force, are thought to have been developed by Leonardo da Vinci in the late
As with other age groups, more older women than older
men experience depression, but rates decrease among
women after menopause.
Evidence suggests that
depression in post-menopausal women generally occurs
in women with prior histories of depression. In any case,
depression is NOT a normal part of aging.
The death of a spouse or loved one, moving from work
into retirement, or dealing with a chronic illness can leave
women and men alike feeling sad or distressed.
Among the valid contraindications applicable to all vaccines are a history of anaphylaxis or other serious allergic reactions to a vaccine or vaccine component and the presence of a moderate or severe illness, with or without fever. Infants who develop encephalopathy within 72 h of a dose of DTP or DTaP should not receive further doses; those who experience a "precaution" event should not normally receive further doses. Because of theoretical risks to the fetus, pregnant women should not receive MMR or varicella vaccine.

A complete history and physical examination is perhaps the
single most important step for guiding preoperative preparation.
(Fig. 46-1) Hyponatremia is not a disease but a manifestation of a variety of disorders. The underlying cause can often be ascertained from an accurate history and physical examination, including an assessment of ECF volume status and effective circulating arterial volume. The differential diagnosis of hyponatremia, an expanded ECF volume, and decreased effective circulating volume includes congestive heart failure, hepatic cirrhosis, and the nephrotic syndrome.
