Today, cancer research is focused on determining how genome and proteome level
information may be useful as tools in prevention, diagnosis, and prognosis. The
development of “omics” technologies, such as proteomics and transcriptomics has
opened new research areas for scientists working on cancer research.
The gold standard of assessing liver fibrosis is liver biopsy, which is invasive and not without risk. Therefore, searching for noninvasive serologic biomarkers for liver fibrosis is an importantly clinical issue. Methods: A total of 16 healthy volunteers and 45 patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) were enrolled (F0: n = 16, F1: n = 7, F2: n = 17, F3: n = 8 and F4: n = 13, according to the METAVIR classification). Three serum samples of each fibrotic stage were analyzed by two-dimension difference gel electrophoresis (2D-DIGE). The differential proteins were identified by...
The registry of the new city was then contacted until the
individual was located. Changes of residence were recorded in a database with the exact
date of moving. In the case of death, date and city of death were provided by the local
Cause of death was either ascertained through a record linkage system of the NRW regional
statistical office or through the local health offices. The record linkage system has been
described in detail by Klug and colleagues (2003). Local health offices provided an
anonymous copy of the relevant death certificate.
Koppel and Shtrimberg (2006) argue that models based on lexical features can distinguish good news from bad news
with accuracy of about 70%. They introduce a simple method for generating labeled examples for sentiment
analysis: news stories about publicly traded companies are labeled positive or negative according to price changes of
the company stock. The show that there are many lexical markers for bad news but none for good news. The novel
idea is the automatic unsupervised clusterization of large amount of news.
Recent advances in clinical proteomics have propelled us into an exciting period of discovery of
new cancer biomarkers, although the available proteomic technologies have their limitations. The
principles of proteomic technology require stringent guidelines for the collection of clinical material,
the application of analytical techniques, and for our interpretation of the data.
In this review, we present an overview of the serum tumor markers in current use.
Pancreatic cancer is one of the most fatal human malignancies with extremely poor
prognosis making it the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United
States. The molecular mechanisms of pancreatic carcinogenesis are not well
understood. The major focus of these two books is towards the understanding of the
basic biology of pancreatic carcinogenesis, identification of newer molecular targets
and the development of adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapies.
The grim picture of women’s health, including maternal mortality and
HIV, has many causal factors, and solutions are to be found in multiple
sectors. However, many of these solutions are mediated through and require
the presence of strong and effective local health systems. This level of care,
defined in many countries as the “district health system,” embraces the contin-
uum of care reaching from the household/community level up through the first
referral facility level, to the district hospital.
In response to various pressures, businesses have begun to report externally on their
environmental policy and performance. The significance of such external reporting depends on
the extent of changes in management culture and systems and on how new measures influence
management decisions. The 'greening of accountancy' involves a reappraisal of how to identify
and measure the relevant costs of processes and products (such as 'Total Cost Assessment') and
a redesign of incentive mechanisms.
More recently, Cox and Fisher (2009) analyzed the titles of contemporary romance
novels to determine if their popularity might be related to evolutionary themes that would
be expected to have widespread appeal when it comes to some of the unique and recurrent
reproductive issues that women confront. The five most common words featured in
romance novel titles were love, bride, baby, man, and marriage, in that order. Common
themes extracted from these titles included commitment, reproduction, masculine/high
ranking suitors, and resources.
Since the 1990s, Pollution Probe has focused its programmes on issues related to air pollution, water
pollution and human health, including a major programme to remove human sources of mercury from the
environment. Pollution Probe’s scope has recently expanded to new concerns, including the unique risks
that environmental contaminants pose to children, the health risks related to exposures within indoor
environments, and the development of innovative tools for promoting responsible environmental behaviour.
Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) was first described possibly at the end of the XVII
century by Buckley (1931) and Connor, but it was only recognized after the radiologic
descriptions of Bechterew, Strumpell and Marie, during the XIX century. In 1964 the
American Rheumatism Association classified AS as a distinct disease. About forty
years ago (1973), Schlosstein and Brewerton published simultaneously but
independently the association of AS with the Class I allele B*27.
The concept of tissue engineering is to
regenerate target tissue by mimicking the developmental or regenerative process of that
tissue. Thus, it can be considered an ideal therapeutic option for treating various tissue
defects. Tissue engineering of skin, cartilage, and bone has already been shown both feasible
and effective in several clinical studies, and its efficacy has attracted significant attention
from both patients and doctors.
The most important investment strategy has to do
with support for creative activity within communitie
as it emerges in relatively organic ways. This has to b
led in large part through the allocation of direct and
flexible grant support for artists and cultural groups.
This demand-oriented support would primarily
be provided within neighborhoods, but could also
consist of partnerships with citywide and regional
organizations, particularly where there is the potenti
to connect places to institutions and audiences that
would not easily be involved otherwise.
