  • Bladder, uterine, and rectal prolapse are common sequelae of childbirth. Sometimes bulging is obvious on initial inspection, but other times it may only be evident when the patient bears down as if she were attempting to void and then defecate. The examiner should be appropriately positioned before undertaking this evaluation, because some women will lose urine with this maneuver. For many women with prolapse, diagnosis is only possible after a more detailed gynecologic examination (see Chapters 10 and 14)....

  • The belief that children will take care of the parents in the old age is eroding in India where the family size has been cut down as a result of the demographic process (Dandelkar, 1996). The situation in the urban areas shows a rejection of older people by the next generation and this is spreading to rural areas (Desai, 1985). In the nuclear family regime, the position of the aged becomes more vulnerable and is treated as a burden to the family (Nayar, 1992). The social negligence of the aged occurs due to cultural, social and economic relations within the...

  • Recent imperfect capital market theories (e.g., Bernanke and Gertler (1989), Gertler and Gilchrist (1994), Kiyotaki and Moore (1997)) predict that changing credit market conditions can have very di®erent e®ects on small and large ¯rms' risk. Agency costs induced by asymmetry in the infor- mation held by ¯rms and their creditors make it necessary for ¯rms to use collateral when borrowing in the credit markets. Small ¯rms, it is argued, typically do not have nearly as much collateral as large ¯rms and will not have the same ability to raise external funds.

  • The success of Selznick, in particular, as an independent producer working closely with the studios, pointed the way towards what was to be the future structure of Hollywood production, which became increasingly organized on a contracted-out basis from the 1950s onwards. The studio production-line system gave way to the package system, in which individual film projects were put together on a one- off basis.

  • Two elements instil a degree of moderate optimism going forward. First, major policy decisions have significantly reduced tail risks and relieved market stress. The June European Council decisions were swiftly followed up with concrete progress towards establishing a Banking Union. The European Council of 18-19 October agreed on a timetable for the establishment of a Single Supervisory Mechanism and advanced further on the deepening of EMU, encompassing the financial, budgetary, economic, and political dimensions.

  • Among seniors, food choice and related activities are affected by health status, biological changes wrought by aging and functional abilities, which are mediated in the larger arena by familial, social and economic factors. Determinants of healthy eating stem from individual and collective factors. Individual components include age, sex, education, physiological and health issues, psychological attributes, lifestyle practices, and knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and behaviours, in addition to other universal dietary determinants such as income, social status and culture.

  • The 10 problems of least concern are generally issues of limited exposure to most small-busi- ness owners and typically find themselves at the bottom of the ranking each year. Three prob- lems are new to the top 10 of least concern and one problem in the group is new to the survey. “Exporting My Products/Services” holds onto the 75th ranking, a position held for six of seven editions that it has been listed as a problem. It moved up one position in 2000, replaced by the problem “Y2K Impacts.

  • During the last decade consumer groups, parents and teachers’ bodies, and public health advocacy organisations have called for greater control on the marketing of foods and beverages to children. A number of authoritative reports have highlighted the need to restrict such marketing to ensure that children are not unduly influenced to consume foods high in fats, sugar and salt. A 2009 review of regulations (the PolMark study1) suggested that successful regulation required government leadership with specified timelines and clear, measurable objectives.

  • A more widely used device is the buying and selling of futures contracts on the commodities exchange. All individuals or firms holding agricultural commodities for which futures markets are available may guard -- "hedge" -- against price changes. Essential marketing services are performed by the people who run the futures exchange and enforce its trading rules, the brokers who act as agents on the floor of the exchange, and the speculators who assume the risks and thus make hedging possible.

  • For small join tables, REED always chooses to push them into the network if their selectivity is smaller than one. For intermediate tables, the REED query optimizer makes a decision as to whether to push the join into the network based on the estimated selectivity of the predicate (which may be learned from past performance or gathered statistics, or estimated using basic query optimization tech- niques [28]) and the average depth of sensor nodes in the network.

  • MERs can range from less than 1% for money market funds to more than 3% for some specialty funds. More complex funds tend to have higher MERs because the manager needs to do more to effectively manage the fund, and these funds are more costly to run. Index funds usually have very low MERs because duplicating an index involves less research and less trading. For this reason, they often outperform actively managed funds over the long term. However, keep in mind that a low MER doesn’t necessarily mean more money in your pocket. For example, you’ll make more on a fund...

  • It is not yet clear how exposure to low ambient concentrations of particulates might produce the health effects observed in epidemiological studies and whether certain attributes of particles may be more closely associated to these health effects. The characteristics of particles that are being investigated for their roles in causing health effects include metal content, particle size, and particles as carriers of other toxic compounds (such as gases or biological toxins from bacteria and pollens etc.).

  • This article compares and contrasts two technologies for delivering broadband wireless Internet access services: ‘‘3G’’ vs. ‘‘WiFi’’. The former, 3G, refers to the collection of third-generation mobile technologies that are designed to allow mobile operators to offer integrated data and voice services over mobile networks. The latter, WiFi, refers to the 802.11b wireless Ethernet standard that was designed to support wireless LANs.

  • We find strong evidence that having access to a car is particularly important for black and Latino workers. We find a difference in employment rates between car-owners and non car-owners that is considerably larger among black workers than among white workers. Moreover, the car- employment effect for Latino workers is significantly greater than the comparable effect for non- Latino white workers yet significantly smaller than the effect for black workers.

  • The rest of the paper is structured as follows. The next section discusses related work and expands on Sextant’s contributions. In sections 3 through 6, we discuss the basic operation of Sextant, including its area representation, its extraction of constraints from wireless radios and sensors, and its distributed solution techniques for node and event localization. Section 7 describes how the inter- action between node and event localization can be used to refine position estimates. Section 8 describes the network protocol used to obtain and combine position estimates.

  • To the extent that earnings and book values are some of the factors used to weight stocks in the portfolio, FI will systematically overweight “value” stocks and underweight “growth” stocks. Moreover, to the extent that FI attempts to underweight stocks with (temporarily) high market capitalizations, there will be a tendency for an FI portfolio to contain smaller-capitalization stocks compared with a cap-weighted index. According to Eugene Fama and Kenneth French (2007), RAFI is a “triumph of marketing, and not of new ideas.
