  • In this text, the basic mathematical properties of the golden ratio and its occurrence in the dimensions of two- and three-dimensional figures with fivefold symmetry are discussed. In addition, the generation of the Fibonacci series and generalized Finobacci series and their relationship to the golden ratio are presented. These concepts are applied to algorithms for searching and function minimization.

  • When automatically translating from a weakly inflected source language like English to a target language with richer grammatical features such as gender and dual number, the output commonly contains morpho-syntactic agreement errors. To address this issue, we present a target-side, class-based agreement model.

  • Clarification requests (CRs) in conversation ensure and maintain mutual understanding and thus play a crucial role in robust dialogue interaction. In this paper, we describe a corpus study of CRs in task-oriented dialogue and compare our findings to those reported in two prior studies. We find that CR behavior in task-oriented dialogue differs significantly from that in everyday conversation in a number of ways. Moreover, the dialogue type, the modality and the channel quality all influence the decision of when to clarify and at which level of the grounding process. ...

  • There are a growing number of popular web sites where users submit and review instructions for completing tasks as varied as building a table and baking a pie. In addition to providing their subjective evaluation, reviewers often provide actionable refinements. These refinements clarify, correct, improve, or provide alternatives to the original instructions. However, identifying and reading all relevant reviews is a daunting task for a user.

  • The order of prenominal adjectival modifiers in English is governed by complex and difficult to describe constraints which straddle the boundary between competence and performance. This paper describes and compares a number of statistical and machine learning techniques for ordering sequences of adjectives in the context of a natural language generation system. the large red American car ??the American red large car *car American red the large Some orders are more marked than others, but none are strictly speaking ungrammatical. ...

  • As our understanding of natural language generation has increased, a number of tasks have been separated from realization and put together under the heading atext planning I . So far, however, no-one has enumerated the kinds of tasks a text planner should be able to do. This paper describes the principal lesson learned in combining a number of planning tasks in a planner-realiser: planning and realization should be interleaved, in a limited-commitment planning paradigm, to perform two types of p]annlng: prescriptive and restrictive. ...

  • Recent developments in generation algorithms have enabled work in nnificafion-based computational linguistics to approach more closely the ideal of grammars as declarative statements of linguistic facts, neutral between analysis an0_synthesis, x-"~-oui this perspective, however, the situation is still far from perfect; all known methods of generation impose constraints on the grammars they assume.

  • Thermal power plants are one of the most important process industries for engineering professionals. Over the past decades, the power sector is facing a number of critical issues; however, the most fundamental challenge is meeting the growing power demand in sustainable and efficient ways. Practicing power plant engineers not only look after operation and maintenance of the plant, but, also look after range of activities including research and development, starting from power generation to environmental aspects of power plants.

  • The Verilog hardware description language (HDL) provides the ability to describe digital and analog systems. This ability spans the range from descriptions that express conceptual and architectural design to detailed descriptions of implementations in gates and transistors. Verilog was developed originally at Gateway Design Automation Corporation during the mid-eighties. Tools to verify designs expressed in Verilog were implemented at the same time and marketed. Now Verilog is an open standard of IEEE with the number 1364.

  • There are many DSP applications that are used in our daily lives, some of which have been introduced in previous chapters. DSP algorithms, such as random number generation, tone generation and detection, echo cancellation, channel equalization, noise reduction, speech and image coding, and many others can be found in a variety of communication systems. In this chapter, we will introduce some selected DSP applications in communications that played an important role in the realization of the systems. ...

  • Most students of electricity begin their study with what is known as direct current (DC), which is electricity °owing in a constant direction, and/or possessing a voltage with constant polarity. DC is the kind of electricity made by a battery (with de¯nite positive and negative terminals), or the kind of charge generated by rubbing certain types of materials against each other. As useful and as easy to understand as DC is, it is not the only \kind" of electricity in use.

  • When new to sales, I followed the advice provided to me by both company training and various books and tapes on the subject. That advice was to prospect via cold calling. I was taught to use both telephone and in-person cold calling, or “pounding the pavement,” and that it was the honorable thing that hardworking salespeople did to succeed. Even though it worked for a while, I always had to struggle to make my numbers that way. All too often, I didn’t make my numbers at all, and I eventually became frustrated altogether with cold calling.

With the current third generation and the arrival of the 4G, the number of mobile users in the world will exceed the number of landlines users. Audio and video streaming have had a significant increase, parallel to the requirements of bandwidth and quality of service demanded by those applications. Mobile networks require that the applications and protocols that have worked successfully in fixed networks can be used with the same level of quality in mobile scenarios....

  • The characteristics lines in X-ray spectra result from electronic transitions between inner atomic orbitals. The X-ray spectra for most heavy elements are much simpler than the UV/Vis spectra observed in ICP-OES, for example. (Only a few lines!!!) Big difference between X-ray and UVVis: The radiation is ionizing, and doesn’t just excite electrons to higher levels. Moseley’s law: Predicts the basic relationship of atom number and the frequency of the characteristic lines
