Numbering systems

The aim of this book is to provide readers with a fundamental understanding of digital system concepts such as logic gates for combinatorial logic circuit design and higher level logic elements such as counters and multiplexers. First year undergraduates taking a course in computer science or engineering (and related disciplines like information technology) are the main target audience. Foundation year students and those taking preuniversity courses (like ‘A’ levels) will also benefit from the text. I have tried to follow a simple approach in writing the text.

The first section introduces the basic concepts of number systems, storage of numerical data, and machine arithmetic. Chapters on the Intel math unit architecture, data conversions, and the details of math unit programming establish a framework for developing routines in engineering and scientific code. The second part, entitled Application Development, covers the implementation of a C++ program and flowcharting. A tutorial on Windows programming supplies skills that allow readers to create professional quality programs.

In many ITrelated fields of study, it is extremely valuable to have a good understanding of the number systems that are often encountered. For many people, not appreciating things such as binary and hexadecimal is a stumbling block that keeps them from advancing their knowledge. If you cringe a little bit at the mention of these topics, then this white paper is definitely for you.

The majority of successful attacks on computer systems via the Internet can be traced to exploitation of security flaws in software and operating systems. These few software vulnerabilities account for the majority of successful attacks, simply because attackers are opportunistic – taking the easiest and most convenient route. They exploit the bestknown flaws with the most effective and widely available attack tools.

The inspiration for Building Systems for Interior Designers came when I tried to teach interior design students about all the ways buildings support our activities and physical needs—without an adequate textbook. I needed an approach that supported the special concerns of the interior designer, while connecting those issues to the work of the rest of the building design team.

This book contains 104 of the best problems used in the training and testing of the U.S. International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) team. It is not a collection of very difficult, and impenetrable questions. Rather, the book gradually builds students’ numbertheoretic skills and techniques. The first chapter provides a comprehensive introduction to number theory and its mathematical structures. This chapter can serve as a textbook for a short course in number theory.

Digital electronics is the branch of electronics based on the combination and switching of voltages called logic levels. Any quantity in the outside world, such as temperature, pressure, or voltage, can be symbolized in a digital circuit by a group of logic voltages that, taken together, represent a binary number. Each logic level corresponds to a digit in the binary (base 2) number system. The binary digits, or bits, 0 and 1, are sufficient to write any number, given enough places. The hexadecimal (base 16) number system is also important in digital systems.
