  • IN THIS DAY and age of professionalism, many careers that years ago didn’t require much expertise now require not only formal training, but also some type of recognized certification. This is particularly true for many healthcare professions, including nursing assistant/nurse aide (NA). Prior to 1987, there were no standards in nursing homes and the quality of care was in question. As the public began to hear horrible stories in the media of the abuse and mistreatment of residents in nursing homes, the government decided to step in and take action.

  • For many of us, the tragic events of September 11, 2001, changed everything. Those whose lives were directly touched by the loss of a loved one, a job, or a place to live were forced to rethink their goals and their lives. For the millions of us who watched the events in stunned horror from the safety of our homes that morning, the need to rethink things was gentler and yet, for many, no less insistent. We suddenly were reminded that there is no guarantee of tomorrow. As the shock was barely wearing off, millions of Americans from every walk of life responded to the events of September 11th...

  • Welcome to the third edition of Understanding Medical Surgical Nursing! We have fully updated all the material, and have added exciting new information on home health care, end-of-life care, disaster response and bioterrorism, stroke, and more. We continue to work hard to provide a text written at an understandable level, with features that help students understand, apply, and practice the challenging content required to function as practical/vocational nurses. We are thankful to the many students who tell us they find the book very readable, and actually enjoyable.

  • Cardiothoracic surgical nursing has undergone immense change over the past decade, owing in part to professional, economic and societal changes. The profile of patients undergoing cardiothoracic surgery has also changed as cardiothoracic surgery is performed upon the more elderly, the high-risk or those with co- morbidity. Although previously considered at too high a risk for surgery, improved surgical techniques, pharmacology and pre- and post-operative care have resulted in a successful outcome for many patients and a return to an improved quality of life....

  • ADHC is a community-based health and long term care service aimed at elders or adults who are disabled enough to be in a nursing home or at risk of nursing home placement. When coordinated with other health center services, particularly primary care clinic services, ADHC can be critical in allowing elders to avoid nursing home placement and helping informal caregivers to continue providing care over an extended period. Participants live at home and are brought into the center from 3 to 5 days a week.

  • For middle-aged people, disability is defined in terms of ability to work or do housework. For children, disability is the inability to participate in mainstream education. An important difference between functioning loss and disability is the potential influence of the external environment. Although in practice it may sometimes be difficult to clearly separate the two concepts, functioning loss is defined as a functioning deficit in an individual; disability on the other hand is an inability to perform within the environment.

  • Iam blessed with loving, supportive, and compas- sionate family. Without my family, I would not be who I am today. My family gave me time to write, brought in take-out dinners, shared my home office (quietly most of the time), and always asked about “the book.” I love my family and want to dedicate this book to my husband John, my son Thomas, my sister Vicki, my brother-in-law Peter, my nephew Scott and his wife Subin, and Christopher—my nephew who dedicated his short life to his children. Your love helps me be all that is possible. Blessings and Namaste....

  • Health care is changing like never before. Every day there are new technologies, new treatments, and new pressures. Changes in response to social, political, and economic factors are challenging and changing everything— including nursing. This text addresses these changes by recognizing that students, now and in the future, will have less clinical experience in acute care settings and more exposure to alternate settings, such as skilled nursing units, home health, and outpatient clinics, for clinical learning experiences.

  • Stay calm. Move quickly. Know what to do. Those three rules are the foundation of natural first aid. They can mean the difference between life and death, injury and disability, a night in the hospital and a life in a nursing home. Unfortunately, even though most of us can generally manage to stay calm and move fast during a crisis, few of us really know what to do in an emergency or when an accident occurs. Even fewer know when and how to use the herbs and other home remedies that can heal. That's why this book was written. It contains all the techniques you...
