In real life, there is always some kind of noise present in the observations. Noise
can correspond to actual physical noise in the measuring devices, or to inaccuracies
of the model used. Therefore, it has been proposed that the independent component
analysis (ICA) model should include a noise term as well. In this chapter, we consider
different methods for estimating the ICA model when noise is present.
This study was designed to describe the radiological findings of
extensively drug-resistant (XDR) pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) and to compare
the observed findings with findings of drug-sensitive (DS) and non-XDR multidrug-
resistant (MDR) TB in non-AIDS patients.
Materials and Methods: From September 1994 to December 2007, 53 MDR
TB patients (M:F = 32:21; mean age, 38 years) and 15 XDR TB non-AIDS
patients (M:F = 8:7; mean age, 36 years) were enrolled in the study. All of the
MDR TB patients had received no treatment or less than one month of anti-TB
This book, which is intended for psychologists, school counselors, and schoolbased
health practitioners, discusses the theoretical structure of group interventions
in schools, and gives examples of how to use these interventions. Although there
are many forms of group interventions in school-based settings, this book concentrates
on group-centered interventions, which are prevention-oriented group programs
that enable students with academic-based problems to learn to function more
The transcription patterns of 64 linear double stranded
DNA templates obtained with T7 RNA polymerase were
investigated. These templates consisted of 17 nucleotide-long sequences under the control of the minimal bac-teriophage T7 promoter and represented all possible
combinations of nucleotides at positions +8, +10 and
George Pan Kouloukis is a Greek attorney-at-law, a barrister. As a member of the Athens Bar Association, he has provided legal services to the Ionian Bank of Greece, the Greek Electric Railways Company, and other corporations. Of course, his book here has nothing to do with law; it is the result of a series of observations that everybody could have made after extensive research, provided he/she had experienced the specific events and situations the author has experienced, described in the book.
Behind every wood solution from Steelcase, is a deep commitment to understanding
our customers’ needs. We observe, we question, we listen and we learn about how
people work. Why are we so inquisitive? Because this knowledge enables us to design
office solutions that create a better work experience. We’ll even tailor a solution if one
of our standard products isn’t exactly what you desire. The result is beautiful wood
solutions that can help to attract and retain valuable knowledge workers and help
them to be more effective and efficient.

This book covers selected topics in Otolaryngology, providing a journey into the
advancements in various aspects of the field. A collection of manuscripts of this nature
involves extensive exposure and accumulation of knowledge from many experienced
teaches over many years. It covers both basic and clinical concepts of otolaryngology.
Each author contributed his/her own perspectives on each topic adding his/her own
theories, future trends and research findings.
DURING THE NINETEENTH CENTURY, when coal gas was used for street illumination, it was observed that trees in the vicinity of streetlamps defoliated more extensively than other trees. Eventually it became apparent that coal gas and air pollutants affect plant growth and development, and ethylene was identified as the active component of coal gas. In 1901, Dimitry Neljubov, a graduate student at the Botanical Institute of St.
Local extension causing empyema is very uncommon, and—as might be inferred from the low rate of bacteremia—metastatic complications of M. catarrhalis pneumonia, such as septic arthritis, are exceedingly rare. As of 1995, 58 cases of bacteremic infection due to M. catarrhalis had been reported, mainly in children 60 years old; most of these patients had severe underlying lung disease and/or were immunocompromised. The syndromes reported have included bacteremia with no apparent focus, pneumonia, endocarditis, and meningitis.
The role of immune complexes formed in situ has been most extensively studied in the
Heymann nephritis model in the rat, a human counterpart of membranous nephropathy
(MN). This is a non-proliferative form of GN in which the humoral, Th2 responses play an
important role. In human idiopathic MN, an increase in the percentage of IL-4 (Masutani et
al. 2004) and IL-10 (Hirayama et al. 2002) was observed in peripheral blood T cells, which
correlated with the amount of proteinuria.
Of course, credit expansion for reasons beyond economic merit might for a while help
increasing economic growth. If credit expansion works toward the extension of productive
capacity, this process might go on for an extended period of time, even if borrowers in the
long run will not be able to pay back their loan. The downside in this case is the accumulation
of non-performing loans in the banking sector which in the end might lead to high fiscal cost.
This might actually be what has been observed in China: One could argue that a non-trivial
part of the loans by...
The extension of central bank liquidity eased the pace of asset-shedding
observed in late 2011, but did not turn the underlying trend. If the banks in the
EBA sample, for instance, failed to roll over their senior unsecured debt
maturing over a two-year horizon, which amounts to more than €1,100 billion
(€600 billion among banks with a capital shortfall), they would have to shed
funded assets in equal measure. By covering these funding needs, the LTROs
and dollar swap lines helped avert an accelerated deleveraging process.
What shall we say when Dream-Pictures leave their frames of night and push us from the waking world?
As the part I played in the events I am about to narrate was rather that of a passive observer than of an active
participant, I need say little of myself. I am a graduate of a Western university and, by profession, a physician.
My practice is now extensive, owing to my blundering into fame in a somewhat singular manner, but a year
ago I had, I assure you, little enough to do. Inasmuch as my practice is now secure, I feel perfectly free to
In recent years, technology has revolutionized the practice of surgery. As
part of this change, surgeon-performed ultrasound has become one of the
most integral parts of the surgeon’s clinical practice. It is not surprising to
observe this current surge of interest in ultrasound by general surgeons because
surgeons are highly motivated to provide the best possible care for
their patients, including the use of the latest technologic advances in diagnosis
Antituberculosis drug resistance is increasing both in
the United Kingdom and internationally.12 It has come
to greater public attention with the emergence of
extensively drug resistant tuberculosis (box 1) in South
Africa, where an outbreak proved rapidly fatal among
people with advanced HIV infection.3 In this article we
review recent global and UK trends in drug resistant
tuberculosis and summarise its diagnosis, treatment,
This small volume is based upon three lectures on Eugenics delivered at Oberlin College in April, 1910. In
preparing them for publication many extensions and a few additions have been made in order to present the
subject more adequately and to include some very recent results of eugenic investigation.
Few subjects have come into deserved prominence more rapidly than has Eugenics. Biologists, social
workers, thoughtful students and observers of human life everywhere, have felt the growing necessity for
some kind of action leading to what are now recognized as eugenic ends.
A central issue in work on modifier ordering is how to order modifiers that are unobserved during system development. English has upwards of 200,000 words, with over 50,000 words in the vocabulary of an educated adult (Aitchison, 2003). Up to a quarter of these words may be adjectives, which poses a significant problem for any system that attempts to categorize English adjectives in ways that are useful for an ordering task. Extensive in-context observation of adjectives and other modifiers is required to 1 Introduction adequately characterize their behavior. ...
This paper presents a new unsupervised algorithm (WordEnds) for inferring word boundaries from transcribed adult conversations. Phone ngrams before and after observed pauses are used to bootstrap a simple discriminative model of boundary marking. This fast algorithm delivers high performance even on morphologically complex words in English and Arabic, and promising results on accurate phonetic transcriptions with extensive pronunciation variation.
During my visit to the Southwest, in the summer of 1885, it was my good fortune to arrive at the Navajo
Reservation a few days before the commencement of a Navajo healing ceremonial. Learning of the
preparation for this, I decided to remain and observe the ceremony, which was to continue nine days and
nights. The occasion drew to the place some 1,200 Navajos. The scene of the assemblage was an extensive
plateau near the margin of Keam's Canyon, Arizona.
