This association has not been established in patients 55 years of age or older. METHODS We prospectively examined 503 consecutive patients who had had a stroke, and we compared the 227 patients with cryptogenic stroke and the 276 control patients with stroke of known cause.

  • This discussion first reviews early theoretical clarifications of how population health change is linked to reduction in mortality at older ages. We briefly discuss evidence of trends prior to recent decades, subsequent understanding of trends from empirical models of health, and developments in understanding the dimensions of health and the process of health change for an aging population. Recent trends in each dimension of health are then reviewed, ending with a discussion of trends in healthy life, which is a combination of mortality and morbidity dimensions....

  • Older individuals encounter a panoply of legal vicissitudes, as well as other types of challenges, in their daily lives. For older persons needing medical services, it frequently is impossible to separate the clinical aspects of care from the legal (as well as ethical, financial, and public policy) elements. Medical care of the elderly is intimately affected and extensively governed by the broad array of legal considerations that are applicable to the delivery of health services in general, and many of these considerations often are exacerbated in the care of older persons.

  • Chambers (1995) described the eight diminution of deprivation among the elderly as poverty, social inferiority, social isolation, physical weakness, vulnerability, seasonality, powerlessness and humiliation of the aged. The poverty is sought to be a major risk of ageing in developing countries (Sen K1994) and study by world bank reveals that in the most of developing countries the older people and dependent are poor and vulnerable (world Bank 1994). The linkage between ageing and poverty and deprivation can have three channels of relations.

  • “Housing Our Elders” (1999) uses a supplement to the 1995 AHS on home accessibility needs and modifications to develop a baseline of information on elderly housing conditions, needs, and strategies. It is found that “overall, older Americans are among the best housed citizens of a well-housed Nation”. However, “millions of elderly households continue to live in housing that costs too much, is in substandard condition, or fails to accommodate their physical capabilities or assistance needs”.

  • Trends in needing help with such activities as housework or shopping may be due to changes in the physical abilities of the older population, but they may also be related to the availability of help in the house, either familial or paid, the availability of appliances, and the accessibility of transportation (1, 12). However, causes of trends in IADL functioning have not been apportioned to reasons residing in the person and reasons outside the person. The trends in what is termed ADL disability have not been nearly as consistent as those in IADL disability (31).

  • Though it is widely recognized that the population of the United States is aging, much of our current understanding in the field of individual decision making is based on data from student populations. While this could be a consequence of subject availability, it may reflect a common though largely unsubstantiated belief that decision making ability declines with aging (Peters 2000). Many older individuals are productive and intellectually viable throughout their lives. Still, others are vulnerable to dementia and neurodegenerative illnesses, such as Alzheimer's disease.

  • Of course, there is some truth in this answer, and probably much more than “some”. We are in the 21st century, and even animal experiments must be updated and modernized. I am perfectly convinced that preclinical scientists (among whom I proudly list myself) must learn, as they have done for a couple of centuries, new ways of designing and carrying out their experiments.

  • There are a number of well-recognized indicators of biological risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and death for which change over some period of time can be determined from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES). Collection of some measures began as early as the 1960s, and some are not available until the 1980s. NHANES data show that the percentage of the older population with high cholesterol has decreased since the 1960s, somewhat faster for women than men (60).

  • As other populations of older adults (e.g. individuals with Parkinson disease or other ailments or people in assisted living arrangements) may be more difficult to study,we chose a population of healthy high-functioning individuals for our first attempt to study decision making in the elderly. Each subject completed an individually administered interview, involving a written questionnaire and several interactive tasks. On average, subjects of both populations took 50 min to complete the interview. For all areas of the investigation involving monetary rewards, real cash was used.

  • This is a moment when an older fascination with looking (at the mother's face, for an obvious example) collides with the initial inklings of self-awareness. Hence it is the birth of the long love affair/despair between image and self-image which has found such intensity of expression in film and such joyous recognition in the cinema audience.

  • Myelodysplasia: Treatment The therapy of MDS has been unsatisfactory. Only stem cell transplantation offers cure: survival rates of 50% at 3 years have been reported, but older patients are particularly prone to develop treatment-related mortality and morbidity.
