  • Mobile network operators will meet many challenges in the coming years. It is expected that the number of people connected, wireline and wireless, will reach five billion by 2015. At the same time, people use more wireless services and they expect similar user experience to what they can now get from fixed networks. Because of that we will see a hundred-fold increase in network traffic in the near future. At the same time markets are saturating and the revenue per bit is dropping.

  • Time and state are two key notions used in a conventional OS. However, these notions cannot be used in the same manner in a distributed system because it contains several computer systems, each with its own clock and memory, that communicate through messages that incur unpredictable communication delays. This chapter discusses practical alternatives to the traditional notions of time and state. These alternative notions are used in the design of distributed control algorithms and recovery schemes used in a distributed OS.

  • LINEAR PROCESSING TECHNIQUES Most discrete image processing computational algorithms are linear in nature; an output image array is produced by a weighted linear combination of elements of an input array. The popularity of linear operations stems from the relative simplicity of spatial linear processing as opposed to spatial nonlinear processing. However, for image processing operations, conventional linear processing is often computationally infeasible without efficient computational algorithms because of the large image arrays....

  • THE principle of osmosis has been known as a means of water removal for some time. However, controlled application of osmotic treatments (OT) to food can be considered among the newest of improved techniques. Food products obtained for final consumption through OT are intermediate moisture products of improved quality, compared to conventionally dried materials. The treatment involves immersing foods in aqueous solutions of sufficiently high concentration at moderate temperatures.

  • We take pride in continuing our association with the CII Mutual Fund Summit. This document presents the perspective of industry stakeholders, along with our points of view, on the current scenario in the mutual fund industry. While a lot has been said about distribution, we have attempted to take an all-encompassing view of the issues and have focussed on looking for the hidden opportunities. We have tried to examine the business structure and its operations in order to find ways of stimulating redesign and innovation.

  • We were able to obtain satisfactory postoperative PSA levels by RTUR-PCa comparable with open radical prostatectomy. But we recently started to think that, after a considerable number of the procedures, minimal residual prostate tissue at the part where cancer was not detected by biopsy might not necessarily prevent the radicality of the disease in carefully selected patients. We performed prostate biopsy to get information about the localization of cancer. The results of cancer localization from operative specimens were consistent with those from biopsy specimens in 46.7%....

  • The only impact evaluations the IDB has are beneficiary evaluations; that is, the IDB asks the beneficiaries in the communities how they evalu- ate what they received: Was it working correctly? Did they like it? Was the choice an adequate one? Was the project sustainable? The IDB study summarized about 800 project visits in various countries in which this sort of beneficiary evaluation was done, and in general, the beneficiary evaluations are quite positive. School projects have the highest evalua- tions even if a few schools that were built are not operating.

  • Coincidentally, in the case of the aforementioned regulations a STAG (STeam And Gas) cycle qualification is/was to provide about 6% of its steam generation to process. At this operating condition, the overall performance approaches that of a conventional STAG power generation cycle. Later in this paper, tables are provided that define GE’s gas turbine and gas engine product characteristics, which in turn illustrate the wide application range and flexibility of these products to support cogeneration applications.

  • Dalton et al. reported the average production costs and returns for 2004 from a sample of 30 organic dairy farms in Vermont and Maine. They reported a total cost for organic milk production of $22.58 per cwt, before a deduction for unpaid operator labor and management, which was not significantly different from milk revenues. Thus organic milk production did not generate any return to unpaid labor and management nor did it produce a positive return to farm assets or equity.

  • The speculum should be carefully positioned so the entire cervix is seen. If excess mucus or other secretions obscure the cervix, they should be gently removed using a proctoswab without disturbing the epithelium. Small amounts of blood will not interfere with cytologic evaluation, but large amounts, as occurs during menses, preclude cytologic interpretation by conventional Pap smear. This is considerably less of a problem when liquid based cytology is used.

  • In recent years the marine transportation system has come under increasing attention. Among the concerns are its safety and efficiency, prevention of and response to ship-caused pollution, and the use of vessels for inimical purposes, ranging from simple lawbreaking (such as smuggling) to serving as a vehicle or target for terrorist acts. Over the past two decades, automatic identification systems (AIS) have been developed in response to these concerns, and much work has been done to define AIS technical and communication requirements.

First, external factors will be discussed; illuminating the backdrop against which these incentive programs operate is important in understanding and assessing program performance.
