Enterprise Manager is Oracle’s single, integrated solution for administering and
monitoring targets that are based on the Oracle technology stack. See "Certified
Enterprise Manager Targets" for a list of Oracle targets and components that Enterprise
Manager can manage. This guide is written for Oracle and system administrators who want to install and
configure Oracle Enterprise Manager. You should already be familiar with Oracle and
the administrative tasks you want to perform.
Oracle Database Installation Guide for Windows is intended for anyone installing an
Oracle Database on a single computer. Additional Installation Guides for Oracle
Database Client, Oracle Real Application Clusters and Cluster Ready Services (CRS),
Oracle Transparent Gateway for DRDA, Oracle Procedural Gateway for APPC, Oracle
Companion CD, and Oracle Enterprise Manager Grid Control are available on the
relevant installation media.
This is the first book dedicated solely to the subject of implementing Oracle Enterprise
Manager 10g Grid Control. It was only a matter of time before such a book was published.
With the first release (10.1) of Grid Control roughly seven years ago, Oracle ushered in a true
system management product. The latest release (10.2) of the product is enjoying large-scale
adoption by companies looking to centrally manage their complete IT infrastructure—not just
their Oracle systems, but non-Oracle ones as well....

and many other types of targets as well. It is best practice to run either Grid Control or Database Control, but not both, although you can run both concurrently.
Grid Control vs. AS Control
How is Grid Control different from Application Server (AS) Control? In short, as just one of many target types it monitors, Grid Control monitors the Oracle Application Server, whereas AS Control administers the Oracle Application Server.
The Oracle Enterprise Manager Metric Reference Manual (hereafter referred to as the
Metric Reference Manual) lists all the target metrics that Enterprise Manager monitors.
This manual compiles in one place all the target metric help available online,
eliminating the need to have the Grid Control Console up and running.
Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC)1 is an option to the award-winning
Oracle Database Enterprise Edition. Oracle RAC is a cluster database with a shared
cache architecture that overcomes the limitations of traditional shared-nothing and
shared-disk approaches to provide highly scalable and available database solutions
for all your business applications. Oracle RAC is a key component of Oracle’s
enterprise grid architecture and cloud foundation.
