Squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck affects more than
40,000 people each year in the U.S., and at least 13,000 people each year die
of this disease. In many countries, oral cancers are one of the leading causes
of cancer incidence, and a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Sadly,
these statistics have not improved despite clear delineation of tobacco and
alcohol as contributory or etiologic in at least 80% of cases.

Harrison's Internal Medicine Chapter 84. Head and Neck Cancer
Head and Neck Cancer: Introduction
Epithelial carcinomas of the head and neck arise from the mucosal surfaces in the head and neck area and typically are squamous cell in origin. This category includes tumors of the paranasal sinuses, the oral cavity, and the nasopharynx, oropharynx, hypopharynx, and larynx. Tumors of the salivary glands differ from the more common carcinomas of the head and neck in etiology, histopathology, clinical presentation, and therapy. Thyroid malignancies are described in Chap. 335.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC, World Health Organization)
[ 1 ] estimated an incidence of 6,617,855 cancers around the world in 2008 with 4,219,626
deaths associated with this disease (IARC 2011).
Planned Parenthood affiliates and a majority of the other WHP clinics we interviewed
have already sustained financial losses because the state of Texas reduced family planning
funding by two-thirds in 2011. Thus, family planning clinics have already experienced losses
that have contributed to a deterioration of services to low-income women. It is worth noting that
the WHP not only provides contraceptive services, but also other women’s health services, such
as screening for breast and cervical cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and sexually transmitted
The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of oral health conditions on the quality of life of elderly people in Joaçaba - SC, in Southern Brazil. A survey based on systematic sampling of clusters was carried out with 183 elderly people that belong to old age groups. The survey was conducted in order to assess the oral conditions of the participants (use of and need for prosthesis) based on the criteria from the World Health Organization publication “Oral Health Surveys, Basic Methods”, 4th edition. The oral health impact profile (OHIP) was used to evaluate the impact of...
Today, cancer research is focused on determining how genome and proteome level
information may be useful as tools in prevention, diagnosis, and prognosis. The
development of “omics” technologies, such as proteomics and transcriptomics has
opened new research areas for scientists working on cancer research.
The taxanes include paclitaxel and docetaxel. These agents differ from the vinca alkaloids in that the taxanes stabilize microtubules against depolymerization. The "stabilized" microtubules function abnormally and are not able to undergo the normal dynamic changes of microtubule structure and function necessary for cell cycle completion. Taxanes are among the most broadly active antineoplastic agents for use in solid tumors, with evidence of activity in ovarian cancer, breast cancer, Kaposi's sarcoma, and lung tumors.
Mucositis Irritation and inflammation of the mucous membranes particularly afflicting the oral and anal mucosa, but potentially involving the gastrointestinal tract, may accompany cytotoxic chemotherapy. Mucositis is due to damage to the proliferating cells at the base of the mucosal squamous epithelia or in the intestinal crypts. Topical therapies, including anesthetics and barrier-creating preparations, may provide symptomatic relief in mild cases.
The average annual incidence rates of certain cancers, including cervical, esophageal, liver, oral
cavity and pharynx, and stomach cancer were significantly higher in the poorest areas in New
Jersey as compared to the wealthiest areas. Among men, lung cancer incidence rates were
significantly higher in the poorest areas, while lung cancer rates for women did not differ
substantially among the three poverty area groups (areas with high poverty, medium poverty, and
Most inherited cases of breast cancer
are associated with two abnormal
genes: BRCA1 (BReast CAncer gene 1)
and BRCA2 (BReast CAncer gene 2).
According to the National Cancer
Institute, women with an abnormal
BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene have about a
60% risk of being diagnosed with breast
cancer during their lifetimes (compared
to about 12% for women overall). Their
risk of ovarian cancer is also increased.
Abnormal BRCA1 or BRCA2 genes are
found in 5% to 10% of all breast cancer
cases in the United States. Other types
of inherited gene abnormalities are less
Cats are not dogs. Small dogs are plagued primarily
with various degrees of periodontal disease (gingivitis
and periodontitis). Large dogs more commonly present
with gingivitis, fractured teeth, and oral masses. Feline

Prevention studies: For women who have a family
history of ovarian cancer, the risk of developing the
disease may be reduced by removing the ovaries
before cancer is detected. This surgery is called
prophylactic oophorectomy. Women who are at high
risk of ovarian cancer are taking part in trials to
study the benefits and harms of this surgery. Other
doctors are studying whether certain drugs can help
prevent ovarian cancer in women at high risk.
The purpose of advocacy, communication, and community mobilization is to empower
individuals to make informed decisions on programme design and service utilization. It is
essential to engage community and professional groups to ensure community participation
and acceptance. Informing target audiences regarding key messages on cervical cancer
prevention should be done well in advance of programme introduction. United Nations
organizations and other technical experts should increase advocacy efforts and awareness to
reach country level staff and partners....
Messages for communication should be carefully adapted to the situation and target
audience, and include comprehensive strategies for prevention and control of cervical
cancer (vaccination of young girls, screening and treatment of older women). Messaging
should include evidence-based technical information, along with political and emotional
information and story-telling when appropriate. See Annex 2 for specific messages for
Tobacco smoke is highly addictive and has been linked to 20 percent of all deaths in the United States. It contains many cancer-
causing chemicals, and almost one third of all cancer deaths are related to tobacco use. Tobacco smoking has generally been
considered to have little or no association with breast cancer risk. Newer studies have challenged this conclusion and suggested
a connection between smoking and an increased risk of breast cancer, but more investigation is needed to resolve this issue.
