  • In this paper the organization of the grammars in the Rosetta machine translation system is described and it is shown how this organization makes it possible to translate between words of different syntactic categories in a systematic way. It is also shown how the organization chosen makes it possible to translate 'small clauses' into full clauses and vice versa. The central concept worked out here in some detail is the concept of 'partial isom o r p h y ' between subgrammars. The system as described here has been implemented and is currently being tested. and a control...

  • In 2006 the Royal Society, in cooperation with the International Council for Science, the InterAcademy Panel on International Issues (now the IAP—the Global Network of Science Academies) and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, organized a workshop that surveyed trends in science and technology (S&T). The objective was to provide an independent contribution from the international scientific community to the 6th Review Conference of the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BWC) that was held in December of that year. ...

  • Human glutamate carboxypeptidase II [GCPII (EC] is recog-nized as a promising pharmacological target for the treatment and imaging of various pathologies, including neurological disorders and prostate can-cer. Recently reported crystal structures of GCPII provide structural insight into the organization of the substrate binding cavity and highlight residues implicated in substrate⁄inhibitor binding in the S1¢ site of the enzyme.

  • In insects, the functional molecules responsible for the taste system are still obscure. The gene for a 28.5 kDa protein purified from taste sensilla of the blowflyPhormia reginabelongs to a gene family that includestakeout of Drosophila melanogaster. Molecular phylogenetic analysis revealed that the PhormiaTakeout-like protein is most similar to the protein encoded by a member of theDrosophila takeoutgene family, CG14661, whose expression and function have not been identified yet.

  • Riftia pachyptila(Vestimentifera) is a giant tubeworm living around the volcanic deep-sea vents of the East Pacific Rise. This animal is devoid of a digestive tract and lives in an intimate symbiosis with a sulfur-oxidizing chemoauto-trophic bacterium. This bacterial endosymbiont is localized in the cells of a richly vascularized organ of the worm: the trophosome.

  • The leukocyte-derived arginine aminopeptidase (L-RAP) is the second ami-nopeptidase localized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) processing anti-genic peptides presented to major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I molecules. In this study, the genomic organization of the gene encoding human L-RAP was determined and the regulatory mechanism of its expres-sion was elucidated.

  • Prolamellar bodies (PLB) contain two photochemically active forms of the enzyme protochlorophyllide oxidoreductase POR-PChlide640 and POR-PChlide650 (the spectral forms of POR-Chlide complexes with absorption maxima at the indicated wavelengths). Resuspension of maize PLB in media with a pH below 6.8 leads to a rapid conversion of POR-PChlide650 to POR-PChlide640 and a dramatic re-organization of the PLB membrane system. In the absence of excess NADPH, the absorption maximum of the POR complex undergoes a further shift to about 635 nm....

  • The core complex ofRhodobacter sphaeroidesis formed by the association of the light-harvesting antenna 1 (LH1) and the reaction center (RC). The PufX protein is essential for photosynthetic growth; it is locatedwithin the core in a 1 : 1 stoichiometry with the RC. PufX is required for a fast ubiquinol exchange between the QBsite of the RC and the Qo site of the cytochromebc1complex.

  • This studywas designed to yield data on the supramolecular organization of the phycobilisome apparatus from Synechocystis, and the possible effects of environmental stress on this arrangement. Phycobilisomes were dissociated ina low ionic strength solutionandaquantitative estimation of the protein components present in each subcomplex was obtained using liquid chromatography coupled on-line with a mass spectrometer equipped with an electrospray ion source (ESI-MS).

  • While it has been demonstrated that these materials have good sensitivity to polar VOCs, such as alcohols and acetone, 11,12 their rather poor response to nonpolar analytes has been viewed as a major drawback. In this report, we explored two ways to improve the sensor performance of regioregular polythiophene. The first approach is to add a second polymer at the end of the polythiophene chain to form a block copolymer. This second polymer interacts with the analytes in different ways, thus adding another dimensionality to the sensing response of the material.

  • FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE DECENTRALIZATION OF THE INFORMATION SYSTEMS UNIT IN ORGANIZATIONS : A CONTIGENCY APPROACH Figure 1.2 displays the average allocation of school effectiveness in markets with three and ten equally-sized districts. Panel A depicts the case where parents are unconcerned about the peer group, as in the left-hand panels of Figure 1.1. Here, families must be perfectly sorted on school effectiveness in equilibrium, and the average μ ’s depicted in the figure are simply order statistics from the standard normal distribution....

  • Detailed assessment of impacts of more than 50 Farmer Field Schools (FFS) in 11 provinces through which over 2,000 farmers were trained from 2005 to 2006 has shown many beneficial effects. Farmers have increased knowledge and their skills in planting and protecting citrus trees and at the same time they have increase awareness of the recording and post-harvest storage, marketing and especially the changes in farming practices significantly after participating in FFS.

  • When the early bands of English invaders came over to take Britain from its Celtic owners, it is almost certain that the soil was held by groups and not by individuals, and as this was the practice of the conquerors also they readily fell in with the system they found. [1] These English, unlike their descendants of to day, were a race of countrymen and farmers and detested the towns, preferring the lands of the Britons to the towns of the Romans. Co-operation in agriculture was necessary because to each household were allotted separate strips of land, nearly equal...

It is well established that Sco pro-teins in eukaryotes are involved in the assembly of the CuAcofactor of mitochondrial cytochromecoxidase; however their precise role in this pro-cess has not yet been elucidated at the molecular level.
