Even though influenza viruses usually cause URIs in adults, they are increasingly being recognized as an impor- tant cause of LRIs in children and perhaps the second most important cause after RSVs of hospitalization of children with an ARI (Neuzil and others 2002).Although influenza is consid- ered infrequent in developing countries, its epidemiology remains to be investigated thoroughly. The potential burden of influenza as a cause of death in children is unknown. Influenza virus type A may cause seasonal outbreaks, and type B may cause sporadic infection.

  • In late March 2008, a hospital clinician was alarmed by the occurrence of 3 consecutive deaths of pre-school children presented with severe pneumonia and rapid deterioration in Fuyang City, Anhui Province. Up until mid-April, 15 children have died of similar severe illness. Through an investigation conducted by local and national experts, the disease was confirmed on April 23 as hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) caused by enterovirus 71 (EV71) based on epidemiological, clinical, laboratory and pathological evidence.

  • Nurses are assigned to respond to the CD calls and investigations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. After hours, calls are relayed to public health through our dispatch 911 service. (An updated contact schedule for public health personnel is provided each Friday to the Sheriff’s office 911dispatch office.) As we learned during the H1N1 pandemic of 2009/10, a large outbreak or public health emergency would require far greater resources than this department has available. Federal dollars were provided for the H1N1 response.
