  • It is not always clear how the differences in intrinsic evaluation metrics for a parser or classifier will affect the performance of the system that uses it. We investigate the relationship between the intrinsic evaluation scores of an interpretation component in a tutorial dialogue system and the learning outcomes in an experiment with human users. Following the PARADISE methodology, we use multiple linear regression to build predictive models of learning gain, an important objective outcome metric in tutorial dialogue.

  • Diabetes is a unique condition for women. When compared with men, women have a 50 percent greater risk of diabetic coma, a condition brought on by poorly controlled diabetes and lack of insulin. Women with diabetes have heart disease rates similar to men, but more women with diabetes die from a first heart attack than do men with diabetes. • It seems apparent that new medical information resources are needed for this population group if they are to make informed decisions about their health. Studies indicate that patients who ask questions, discuss treatment options, express opinions, and state preferences during physician office visits have demonstrably better health outcomes than those who do not (Campbell and Nolfi 2005, n.p.) It is important to question how elderly patients can make the little time they have with their doctor count.
