Mitochondria are dynamic organelles that undergo continual fusion and
fission to maintain their morphology and functions, but the mechanism
involved is still not clear. Here, we investigated the effect of mitochondrial
oxidative stress triggered by high-fluence low-power laser irradiation (HF-LPLI) on mitochondrial dynamics in human lung adenocarcinoma cells
(ASTC-a-1) and African green monkey SV40-transformed kidney fibroblast
Glutathione (GSH) conjugating enzymes, glutathioneS-transferases (GSTs),
are present in different subcellular compartments including cytosol,
mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, nucleus and plasma membrane. The
regulation and function of GSTs have implications in cell growth, oxidative
stress as well as disease progression and prevention.
The increased level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in living organisms over 60 years
ago was implicated in the development of diseases and aging (Harman, 1956; 1983).
This book is a collective scientific monograph presenting several important aspects
related to ROS role in human and animal pathologies. In 1985, German scientist
Helmut Sies first denoted oxidative stress concept, which immediately attracted
attention of researchers in diverse basic fields. Several discoveries substantially
stimulated the interest to ROS as ones related to many diseases.
The role of oxidative stress in pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus was
investigated by measuring lipid peroxidation level, nitrite content, GSH con-centration, and superoxide dismutase and catalase activities in the hippo-campus of Wistar rats. The control group was subcutaneously injected with
0.9% saline. The experimental group received pilocarpine (400 mgÆkg
subcutaneous). Both groups were killed 24 h after treatment.
Abiotic stresses are serious threats to agriculture and the environment which have been exa‐
cerbated in the current century by global warming and industrialization. According to FAO
statistics, more than 800 million hectares of land throughout the world are currently salt-af‐
fected, including both saline and sodic soils equating to more than 6% of the world’s total
land area. Continuing salinization of arable land is expected to have overwhelming global
impact, resulting in a 30% loss of agricultural land over the next 25 years and up to 50% loss
The production of free radicals (ROS) is an unavoidable consequence of life in an
aerobic environment. Free radicals produced from the metabolic activities of oxygen
attack biological membranes and lipoproteins via oxidation in a process called
lipid perioxidation. This attack damages cells and lipids often in a chain reaction
with carbon-based molecules such as polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in a reaction
with molecular oxygen. This creates oxidative stress and damage to tissues.
Free radicals also damage chromosomal DNA.
There is growing evidence on the importance of studies focusing on mechanisms and
strategies leading to cancer prevention. The plethora of approaches include regulation
of oxidative stress using antioxidant therapies, carefully balanced diets and living
habits, epidemiological evidence and molecular approaches on the role of key
biological molecules such as antioxidant enzymes, vitamins, proteins and naturally
occurring free radical scavengers as well as controversial results and clinical
applications. These are some of the topics that this book highlights.

To understand oxidative stress, we review mitochondria together.
Mitochondria consume over 80 percent of the oxygen we breathe and make over 90 percent of the energy our cells need to function. They use the oxygen in the air we breathe to release energy from food. This process transforms food calories into chemical energy, water, and carbon dioxide. The released chemical energy is then stored in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP is the universal currency of energy used by all life on earth.
