  • This book is about a marriage of two compatible yet unlikely partners. Extreme Programming (XP) is a software development methodology that enables users, business people, programmers, and computers to communicate effectively. Perl is a dynamic programming language that lets an XP team embrace the inevitable change caused by effective communication. Perl the fixer and doer of the pair, and XP is the organizer and facilitator. Together they help you build robust software applications efficiently. Like any good marriage, the partners of Extreme Perl support each other....

  • C++ PROGRAMS TO ACCOMPANY PROGRAMMING LOGIC AND DESIGN is designed to be paired with the Fifth Edition of the highly successful Programming Logic and Design by Joyce Farrell. The two books together provide the perfect opportunity for those who want to learn the fundamentals of programming and also get a taste of an actual programming language. Users can discover how real C++ code behaves while remaining within the context of the traditional language-independent logic and design course.

  • A string is enclosed by a pair of ". Unlike symbols, strings may be split into characters and manipulated by a variety of primitive functions. For example, "abcdef", "This is a string", and "This is a string with \" inside" are all strings. A character begins with #\ and has the name of the character. For example, #\a, #\b, and #\space are characters.

  • In the following we give an account of a computer program for the translation of natural languages. The program has the following features: (1) it is adaptable to the translation of any two natural languages, not just to some particular pair; (2) it is a self-modifying program—that is, given the information that it has produced an incorrect translation, together with the translation which it should have produced according to the linguistic judgment of an operator, it will modify itself so as to eliminate the cause of the incorrect translation....

  • Comparative News Summarization aims to highlight the commonalities and differences between two comparable news topics. In this study, we propose a novel approach to generating comparative news summaries. We formulate the task as an optimization problem of selecting proper sentences to maximize the comparativeness within the summary and the representativeness to both news topics. We consider semantic-related cross-topic concept pairs as comparative evidences, and consider topic-related concepts as representative evidences....

  • The traditional mention-pair model for coreference resolution cannot capture information beyond mention pairs for both learning and testing. To deal with this problem, we present an expressive entity-mention model that performs coreference resolution at an entity level. The model adopts the Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) algorithm, which provides a relational way to organize different knowledge of entities and mentions.

  • In spite of some early success with agile methodologies, a number of factors are preventing their widespread adoption. Agile methodology advocates often find it difficult to obtain management support for implementing what seem like dramatic changes in application development. These methodologies require developers, managers and users alike to change the way they work and think. For example, the XP practices of pair programming, test-first design, continuous integration, and an on-site customer can seem like daunting changes to implement.

  • This initial stage of the project also provides the project manager with opportunities to get to know the team and help them get to know each other. The time-honored kick-off group lunch can be combined with techniques often using in training sessions such as sharing personal and professional information with a colleague who then makes the group introduction. In addition, the project manager should ensure that the physical workspace is arranged in a way that facilitates collaborative activities such as pair programming and team problem solving.

  • In this paper, given a text document, we first iden- tify events and their associated arguments. We then identify causality or relatedness relations between event pairs. To do this, we develop a minimally su- pervised approach using focused distributional sim- ilarity methods, such as co-occurrence counts of events collected automatically from an unannotated corpus, to measure and predict existence of causal- ity relations between event pairs.

  • The youngish-looking man who so vigorously swung off the train at Restview, wore a pair of intensely dark blue eyes which immediately photographed everything within their range of vision--flat green country, shaded farm-houses, encircling wooded hills and all--weighed it and sorted it and filed it away for future reference; and his clothes clung on him with almost that enviable fit found only in advertisements. Immediately he threw his luggage into the tonneau of the dingy automobile drawn up at the side of the lonely platform, and promptly climbed in after it.

  • In this paper we give a geometric version of the Satake isomorphism [Sat]. As such, it can be viewed as a first step in the geometric Langlands program. The connected complex reductive groups have a combinatorial classification by their root data. In the root datum the roots and the co-roots appear in a symmetric manner and so the connected reductive algebraic groups come ˇ in pairs.

  • Duke and Appleton (2000) examined 160 nursing assignments in the context of a one year palliative care program. The development of reflective skills over time was assessed by a Wilcoxon paired signed-rank test on data from 51 students who took two modules in different terms during the year. The results suggested that reflective practice did develop over time. Students could readily provide descriptive information about their practice but found the analysis of knowledge and the context of care more difficult.
