Currently, where business and management topics are included in the veterinary
curriculum, they tend to be incorporated under the banner of ‘Professional Studies’, a strand
of education running though most veterinary degrees, which, as its label suggests, covers
the professional behaviour aspects of veterinary medicine.
It is my privilege to introduce this Handbook on Advanced Cancer Care,
which belongs to a series of publications initiated by the European Society
for Medical Oncology (ESMO). There is a great need, especially for medical
oncologists, to have a comprehensive overview of the essential elements
needed for the care of patients with advanced cancer. This handbook fulfills
The Handbook on Advanced Cancer Care provides useful definitions and
surveys of treatment principles.
From non-profit performance space to galleries, to
businesses that offer classes, to specialty supply shops,
to the individual artist entrepreneur and contractor,
neighborhood arts activity is an identifiable business
sector. In some communities, artist entrepreneurs play
a similar early entrant role for commercial strips as
they do for artist housing development.
As economists who study business clusters recognize,
geographical proximity and the interactions that
emerge from related activities within a local area are
important even in the age of electronic connectivity.
We know the interventions that can save most women’s lives. If every
woman had access to essential maternal care, 74% of maternal deaths could
be prevented4. If all women had access to self–controlled means of HIV/
AIDS protection and were in a position within society to use these methods,
millions of HIV/AIDS deaths could be prevented. Thus, we do not so much
need new technology, as we need to ensure universal access, utilization and equity.
But ensuring universal access, utilization and equity means that our health
services cannot continue to function as “business as usual.
When in the closed position, the orifice is obscured by the anterior and posterior leaflets.
The anterior comprises about one half to two thirds of this area, the posterior comprises
about one third to one half of this area. The point of attachment of the anterior leaflet
comprises one third of the circumference of the annulus (the fibrous area) and the posterior
leaflets comprises two thirds of the circumference of the annulus (the muscular area). The
fibrous support of the anterior leaflet is fixed, the muscular support of the posterior leaflet
can enlarge and does so when...
I was sixteen. I didn't have the words to explain why I'd downloaded and kept downloading.
Why making the film that was in my head was such an all-consuming obsession. I'd read
stories of the great directors -- Hitchcock, Lucas, Smith -- and how they worked their arses
off, ruined their health, ruined their family lives, just to get that film out of their head and
onto the screen. In my mind, I was one of them, someone who had to get this sodding
film out of my skull, like, I was filled with holy fire and it would burn me up if I didn't...
Cause-specific survival is commonly estimated in cancer clinical trials and only those deaths
which can be attributed to the cancer in question are considered to be events, while all other
deaths are considered censorings. Using cause-specific survival to estimate net survival
requires that reliably coded information on cause of death is available. The distinguishing
feature of survival analysis is that at the end of the follow-up period the event (such as
death due to cancer) will probably not have occurred for all patients.
Semi-intact cells are cells whose plasma membrane has been permeabilized with detergent
or toxins, and can be referred to as “cell-type test tubes” (Fig. 1). We use a bacterial poreforming
toxin, streptolysin O (SLO), to permeabilize the cells. At 4℃, SLO binds to
cholesterol in plasma membranes. At warmer temperatures, SLO assembles to form
amphiphilic oligomers, which results in the generation of small, stable transmembrane
pores (Bhakdi et al., 1985).
A manager may be able to generate higher returns than
an OE benchmark before costs, yet after costs investors’ returns may
be below the benchmark. If a fund can beat the OE benchmark on
an after cost basis, we say that the fund adds value for investors, to
distinguish this situation from one where the manager has investment
ability, but either extracts the rents from this ability in the form of fees
and expenses, or dissipates it through trading costs. We will say that
a manager has investment ability if the managed portfolio outperforms
the OE portfolio on a before-cost basis.
In commemoration of Mother’s Day,
Save the Children is publishing its twelfth
annual State of the World’s Mothers report.
We have assembled our Champions for
Children – leading voices from academia,
politics, religion, business and the arts – to
celebrate the great progress the world
has made in recent decades to reduce
deaths among children under age 5. These
distinguished essayists explore the many
reasons why the united States, as a nation,
must continue to invest in lifesaving maternal
and child health programs. u.S.
Given the virtual absence of formal channels for care and support of the older population, older
Cambodians are dependent largely on their families, and particularly their adult children, for any
assistance needed. Table 7 indicates the number of living children of the current generation of elderly
Cambodians. Although many elderly Cambodians lost children during the tumultuous history of the last
several decades, sustained high fertility has resulted in substantial numbers of children who still survive.
It is scarcely to be expected that banks operating in dif-
ferent regions, serving different classes of customers and fol-
lowing different policies, would have uniform experience.
Therefore, for each of the factors to be analyzed, we have
supplemented the composite analysis for all banks by an in-
dividual analysis for each bank that submitted a sufficiently
large sample. These individual analyses, which are presented
in Appendix B, indicate the degree of variation among banks
and the extent to which the average experience of all banks
typifies theexperience of any one bank.
Club, Eurocard in connection with MasterCard, Visa) has grown from approximately 10 million at the
end of 1994 to more than 18.8 million at the end of 2001. At the same time, the number of acceptance
points (especially in the retail sector and the hotel business) has increased substantially. In 2001,
German cardholders made payments by credit card amounting to approximately EUR 37.2 billion. In
spite of this, credit cards are still used far less than other payment instruments (eg debit cards) in the
Federal Republic of Germany.
This book provides detailed descriptions of the various money market instruments and the markets in
which they are used. Where possible, the book tries to explain the historical forces that led to the
development of an instrument, influenced its pattern of growth, and led to new forms of the instrument. A
major focus in the book is the Federal Reserve, which, in addition to its monetary policy role, plays an
important role as a regulator in a number of the markets.
Much of the discussion in the book deals with the period...
To be effective in a national setting, international standards require the force of
law or other regulatory backing. If not, compliance becomes a matter of non-transparent
discretion on the part of preparers and auditors of financial statements, outside the
constraints of any regulatory framework. In such cases, the standards should more
properly be considered “offshore” rather than “international.

DMOs tend to be part of the local, regional or national government and have political and
legislative power as well as the financial means to manage resources rationally and to ensure that
all stakeholders can benefit in the long term. Destination management and marketing should act as
tools and facilitators to achieve a complex range of strategic objectives, which will ultimately need
to satisfy the needs and wants of stakeholders. Four key generic strategic objectives should be
addressed by DMOs, as illustrated in Table 2.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is an integral part of the United
States Department of Transportation (DOT) and its mission is to save lives, prevent injuries, and
reduce traffic-related health care and other economic costs associated with motor vehicle use and
highway travel. To accomplish this, NHTSA collects and analyzes motor vehicle crash data, and
develops, promotes, and implements educational programs, vehicle safety standards, research,
and enforcement programs.
Like every artistic process, virtual sculpture (see figure 1 for example), requires a strong
interaction between the artist and his artwork. Feeling the material being modeled enforces
the metaphor of sculpting and the immersion of the user, making the creative activity easier.
The need for haptic feedback is even stronger when the user visualizes his 3D sculpture on
a standard screen: without force feedback, correctly positioning an editing tool with respect
to the sculpture is difficult, since it may require changing the viewpoint several times to
check the tool’s position....
There have been some attempts to explain theoretically the behavior of the stock return volatility.
Veronesi (1999) constructs a model with regime shifts in the endowments in which investors will-
ingness to hedge against their own uncertainty on the true regime generates overreaction to good
news in bad times and volatility clustering. In contrast to that paper, I assume that the exogenous
state variables are not subject to regimes, neither do they exhibit mean-reversion.
