  • Harrison's Internal Medicine Chapter 37. Palpitations Palpitations: Introduction Palpitations are extremely common among patients who present to their caregiver and can best be defined as an intermittent "thumping," "pounding," or "fluttering" sensation in the chest. This sensation can be either intermittent or sustained, and either regular or irregular. Most patients interpret palpitations as an unusual awareness of the heart beat and become especially concerned when they sense that they have had "skipped" or "missing" heart beats.

  • What to expect of this book I assume that the reader of this book will have the level of knowledge of the ECG that is contained in The ECG Made Easy, to which this is a companion volume. The ECG is indeed easy in principle, but the variations in pattern seen both in normal people and in patients with cardiac and other problems can make the ECG seem more complex than it really is. This book concentrates on these variations, and contains several examples of each abnormality. It is thus intended for anyone who understands the basics, but now wants to use the ECG to its maximum potential as a...

  • Palpitations may be reported by patients as sensations of flipping, stopping, pounding, or fluttering of their heart. Abrupt onset and offset of rapid, sustained palpitations suggests supraventricular or ventricular tachycardia. If the sensation associated with the palpitations is accompanied by dizziness, presyncope, or syncope, then ventricular tachycardia needs to be excluded.

  • My many visits to Australia were made much more enjoyable by my friendship with Phil Tresidder. Phil was a press man who covered it as it was. He wasn’t a sensationalist and he didn’t manufacture things. I have so many great memories of Phil and of Australia. I well remember playing the Augusta course with Phil the morning after my last US Masters win in 1978, and in turn playing several rounds at his home course, Bonnie Doon, in Sydney. I used to meet him at various golf tournaments around the world and enjoyed finding out what was happening in Australia.
