We decided to write this book when we discovered that a majority of the companies
we talked to had dysfunctional and low-value added processes for budgeting, fore-
casting, and financial reporting. And, as financial executives come and go, typically
little is done to streamline these processes. Even when large amounts of money are
invested in new financial software, the solutions are usually put in place based on
the old, inefficient routines.
At its core, the process of designing reports hasn’t changed substantially in the past 20 years. The report
designer lays out report objects, which contain data from a known source of data, in a design application
such as Reporting Services, Business Objects Reports, or Microsoft Access. He or she then tests report
execution, verifies the accuracy of the results, and distributes the report to the target audience.
Sure, there are enough differences between design applications to mean that the designer must
become familiar with each particular environment.
The IT profession has experienced dramatic changes
within the past 10 years and the pace is not slowing.
Just within the past year, we have seen:
• Vista, a new OS from Microsoft
• Leopard, a new OS from Apple
• A new certification program from Cisco
• A new certification program from Microsoft
• A record year for data security breaches
• An increase in the importance of balancing IT
and business skills

Lindsay woke on Thursday morning to the sound of Cordelia pulling the curtains open. 'Look at this view!' she exclaimed. All Lindsay could see was a square of grey sky. 'Do I have to?' she groaned crossly. 'What time is it?' 'Half-past seven. I'm going for a run.' Already she was dressed in the familiar training shoes and track suit. It occurred to Lindsay in her jaundiced frame of mind that Cordelia was certainly fit enough to have sprinted to the music department, garrotted Lorna and sprinted back again without even being out of breath, Cordelia added, I'll be...
Reviews public- and private-sector programs for assessing and assuring the quality of medical care services, and analyzes their potential effectiveness. In particular, the report examines Professional Standards Review Organizations, the Performance Evaluation Procedures (PEP) used by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals, the programs devised by prepaid group practice systems establish......
.The research described in this report was sponsored by the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD). The research was conducted in the RAND National Defense Research Institute, a division of the RAND Corporation and a federally funded research and development center supported by the OSD, the Joint Staff, the unified commands, and the defense agencies under Contract DASW01-01-C-0004.
This report explores why, in recent decades, military fixed-wing aircraft costs have escalated beyond the rates of commonly used inflation indices, examining both economy-driven factors that the Services cannot control and customer-driven ones that they can. The authors found that this trend of cost increases is true for all types of aircraft
Computer technology has made incredible progress in the past half century. In
1945, there were no stored-program computers. Today, a few thousand dollars
will purchase a personal computer that has more performance, more main memory,
and more disk storage than a computer bought in 1965 for $1 million. This
rapid rate of improvement has come both from advances in the technology used
to build computers and from innovation in computer design. While technological
improvements have been fairly steady, progress arising from better computer
architectures has been much less consistent.
The effort to achieve a single set of global accounting standards has gained
significant momentum during the past three years. The logic behind the development
of a single set of high-quality global accounting standards for the
world’s integrating capital markets has been evident for some time.

If better management (BMP) was adopted in Vietnam there is evidence that the current trends and past environmental degradation can be stopped and even reversed, and shrimp production efficiency can be increased.
The second aim of this thesis is to investigate whether Thai mutual fund performance
can be explained by any of its characteristics. The study examines statistic and economic
importance of fund characteristics to its performance. In the literature, evidence is sparse and
mixed on developed markets, let alone that on emerging markets. Rather than focusing on
one particular characteristic, this study draws on the evidence from five important
characteristics in the literature, which offer theoretical and empirical support.
The smart money hypothesis states that investor money is “smart” enough
to f low to funds that will outperform in the future, that is, that investors have
genuine fund selection ability.
1 Research into smart money in the mutual fund
context was initiated by Gruber (1996). His aim is to understand the continued
expansion of the actively managed mutual fund sector despite the widespread
evidence that on average active fundmanagers do not add value.
In this paper, we investigate the use of paste additives to improve the performance of a horizontal plate, lead–acid battery. The horizontal plate battery can deliver high power for electric and hybrid electric vehicle applications. We develop a series of designs having different paste additives to continuously improve the specific energy ŽW hrkg. performance of this battery. Computer models, previously developed and reported, are used to estimate the specific energy performance of these designs.
The duty and performance of the vacuum mixing and reacting technology for the preparation of lead/acid battery paste is reported. The production results achieved under vacuum are compared with those of conventional, air-cooled plants. Due to the more effective cooling and the use of a closed system, improvements such as reduced burned-lead portion, control of paste composition and formulation accuracy, and independence of climatic conditions are achieved.
At the same time, we document a substantial cross-sectional variation in
the return gap, indicating that hidden costs are more important for some
funds, while hidden benefits are more pronounced for others. We also find
strong persistence in the return gap for up to 5 years into the future, which
suggests that the return gap is driven by systematic factors. Moreover, we
find persistence in the return gap not only for the worst performers but
also for the best performers.
Ourmain result shows that the past return gap helps to predict fund per-
This essay explores one manifestation of the popular historicization of
“Hollywood,” the historical film clip montages created—mostly—by former trailer
producer Chuck Workman for the Academy Awards telecasts produced by Gil Cates
during the 1990s. These brief pieces of (televised) film about film history participated
strongly in the reconfiguring and marketing of the cinematic past in the popular
imaginary during the nineties, pivotal years in the globalization of hegemonic American
The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program was created in 1982 by the Small Business
Innovation Development Act. The program is designed to stimulate technology innovation by small businesses,
provide technical and scientific solutions to challenging problems, and encourage the marketing of the resulting
new technologies in the private sector. Federal agencies with more than $100 million in extramural research and
development (R&D) are required to allocate 2.5 percent of their research budgets to small businesses. Such funds
from all federal agencies amounted to approximately $1.
