This book synthesizes current research in the integration of computational intelligence and pattern analysis techniques, either individually or in a hybridized manner. The purpose is to analyze biological data and enable extraction of more meaningful information and insight from it. Biological data for analysis include sequence data, secondary and tertiary structure data, and microarray data.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been proven to play important roles at the
post-transcriptional level in animals and plants. To investigate clustering
patterns and specific sequence characteristics in the flanking regions of
plant miRNA genes, we performed genome-wide analyses ofArabidopsis
thaliana, Populus trichocarpa, Oryza sativaand Sorghum bicolor.
Community-based knowledge forums, such as Wikipedia, are susceptible to vandalism, i.e., ill-intentioned contributions that are detrimental to the quality of collective intelligence. Most previous work to date relies on shallow lexico-syntactic patterns and metadata to automatically detect vandalism in Wikipedia. In this paper, we explore more linguistically motivated approaches to vandalism detection.
We analyze the concept of focus in speech and the relationship between focus and speech acts for prosodic generation. We determine how the speaker’s utterances are inﬂuenced by speaker’s intention. The relationship between speech acts and focus information is used to deﬁne which parts of the sentence serve as the focus parts. We propose the Focus to Emphasize Tones (FET) structure to analyze the focus components. We also design the FET grammar to analyze the intonation patterns and produce tone marks as a result of our analysis.
We present a web tool that allows users to explore news stories concerning the 2012 US Presidential Elections via an interactive interface. The tool is based on concepts of “narrative analysis”, where the key actors of a narration are identiﬁed, along with their relations, in what are sometimes called “semantic triplets” (one example of a triplet of this kind is “Romney Criticised Obama”).
The Chinese comma signals the boundary of discourse units and also anchors discourse relations between adjacent text spans. In this work, we propose a discourse structureoriented classiﬁcation of the comma that can be automatically extracted from the Chinese Treebank based on syntactic patterns. We then experimented with two supervised learning methods that automatically disambiguate the Chinese comma based on this classiﬁcation.

We have compared the site-by-siteN-glycosylation status of
human lactoferrin (Lf) produced in maize, a monocotyle-don, and in tobacco, usedas amodel dicotyledon.Maizeand
tobacco plants were stably transformed and recombinant Lf
was purified from both seeds and leaves. N-glycopeptides
were generated by trypsin digestion of recombinant Lf and
purified by reverse-phase HPLC. The N-glycosylation pat-tern of each site was determined by mass spectrometry.

This paper describes an analysis method which uses heuristic knowledge to find local syntactic structures of Chinese sentences. We call it a preprocessing, because we use it before we do global syntactic structure analysisCl]of the input sentence. Our purpose is to guide the global analysis through the search space, to avoid unnecessary computation. Japanese has m a n y noun phrase patterns of the type A no B consisting of two nouns A and B with an adnominal particle no. As the semantic relations between the two nouns in the noun phrase are not made explicit, the interpretation of the phrases depends mainly on the semantic characteristics of the nouns. This paper describes the semantic diversity of A no B and a method of semantic analysis for such phrases based on feature unification.
Recent research has shown that language and the socio-cognitive phenomena associated with it can be aptly modeled and visualized through networks of linguistic entities. However, most of the existing works on linguistic networks focus only on the local properties of the networks. This study is an attempt to analyze the structure of languages via a purely structural technique, namely spectral analysis, which is ideally suited for discovering the global correlations in a network.
We propose a method for analyzing long complex and compound sentences that utilizes global structure analysis with domain-specific pattern grammar. Previously, long sentence analysis with global information used the following methods: two-level analysis--global structure analysis of long sentences with domain-independent function words and parsing of their constituents[Doi et al., 1991], and pattern matching--adaptation of domain-specific fixed pattern to input sentences. By utilizing domaindependent information the latter method could analyze long sentences of that domain.
