A wealth of advanced pattern recognition algorithms are emerging from the interdiscipline
between technologies of effective visual features and the human-brain cognition
process. Effective visual features are made possible through the rapid developments in
appropriate sensor equipments, novel filter designs, and viable information processing
architectures. While the understanding of human-brain cognition process broadens the way
in which the computer can perform pattern recognition tasks.
Research in computer vision has exponentially increased in the last two decades due to the
availability of cheap cameras and fast processors. This increase has also been accompanied
by a blurring of the boundaries between the different applications of vision, making it truly
interdisciplinary. In this book we have attempted to put together state-of-the-art research
and developments in segmentation and pattern recognition.

Notwithstanding the tremendous effort to solve the face recognition problem, it is not
possible yet to design a face recognition system with a potential close to human
performance. New computer vision and pattern recognition approaches need to be
investigated. Even new knowledge and perspectives from different fields like, psychology
and neuroscience must be incorporated into the current field of face recognition to design a
robust face recognition system.
The field of digital image segmentation is continually evolving. Most recently, the advanced segmentation methods such as Template Matching, Spatial and Temporal ARMA Processes, Mean Shift Iterative Algorithm, Constrained Compound Markov Random Field (CCMRF) model and Statistical Pattern Recognition (SPR) methods form the core of a modernization effort that resulted in the current text. This new edition of "Advanced Image Segmentation" is but a reflection of the significant progress that has been made in the field of image segmentation in just the past few years.
Handwritten text recognition is a difficult problem in the field of pattern recognition. This paper focuses on two aspects of the work on recognizing isolated handwritten Vietnamese characters, including feature extraction and classifier combination. For the first task, based on the work in  we will present how to extract features for Vietnamese characters based on gradient, structural, and concavity characteristics of optical character images. For the second task, we first develop a general framework of classifier combination under the context of optical character recognition. ...
