  • Children, in general, are healthier than their adult counterparts, particularly as adults reach the fifth decade of life and beyond. However, children do have multiple acute illnesses each year, and a substantial number of children, often estimated to be 20 percent or more, are burdened with chronic health disorders, some of them disabling or life threatening. Medical attention, including evidence-based prescription of drugs or biologics, is vital for their well-being.

  • However, I think that such a dismissal is plain wrong. It is unconceivable that hundreds of scientists throughout the world have for 30 years all carried out flawed or even fraudulent research demonstrating that several compounds improve the resistance of the brain to ischemic damage. Granted, that may have happened sometimes, but hundreds of laboratories around the world cannot have been run during 30 years by incompetent or criminal scientists.

  • The evidence base for the insulin secretagogues was more extensive than ascertained for the parent guideline. However, in many of the papers in which they are compared to other drugs they were being used as the comparator therapy rather than the investigated therapy. New evidence did not lead to new conclusions about the role of these drugs in clinical management, either from the point of view of efficacy or safety.

  • Contact between mothers inside prison and their children outside prison may be severely and/or inappropriately restricted. In some countries, mothers are temporarily separated (such as by stopping visits) from the children to punish the mother (Robertson, 2008). Children are a life-sustaining force for many prisoners, and breaking up the bond between the mother and child is often punishment of the worst kind for the mother (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, 2008) and strongly affects her physical and mental health. It also punishes the child, who has done nothing wrong. ...

  • The results of the BMJ Clinical Evidence review tend to indicate that as far as antipsychotic medication goes, current drugs are of some, if limited, efficacy in many patients, and that most drugs cause side effects in most patients. Although this is a rather downbeat conclusion, this will not be too surprising to clinicians in the field, given their clinical experience and our knowledge of the pharmacology of the available antipsychotic medication.

  • Presently, there is no specific effective antiviral drugs and vaccine available for the treatment of HFMD. Symptomatic treatment is given to provide relief from fever, aches, or pain from the mouth ulcers. Dehydration is a concern because the mouth sores may make it difficult and painful for children to eat and drink. Should their affected children be having fever, the parents are advised to dress their children in light, thin clothing, to do tepid sponging with water (room temperature) as often as necessary, and to expose them under the fan.

  • In many countries, babies born to women in prison stay in prison with their mother, and very young children may accompany their mothers into prison. Facilities vary widely between and within countries. Some countries have mother and baby units, with special facilities to support the mother and the child’s development. In others, babies live in the prisons without the state officially noting or monitoring their presence and without any special provision being made for them.
