  • This working paper focuses on the relevance of social, socioeconomic and behavioural factors on health status and mortality in a longitudinal setting and in a life-course perspective. First, we identify those factors which determine the health status of people aged 60+ in Germany. Based on this, our second aim is to find factors which determine transitions from good general health status, or from the absence of specific diseases, to a bad general health status or the presence of specific diseases.

  • However, I think that such a dismissal is plain wrong. It is unconceivable that hundreds of scientists throughout the world have for 30 years all carried out flawed or even fraudulent research demonstrating that several compounds improve the resistance of the brain to ischemic damage. Granted, that may have happened sometimes, but hundreds of laboratories around the world cannot have been run during 30 years by incompetent or criminal scientists.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common reasons to seek medical care and are sometimes triggered by sexual activity. Urinary incontinence is an increasingly recognized health problem (see Chapter 10). Finally, because domestic violence is common (2), screening for current or previous physical, emotional, or sexual abuse is an important part of the pa- tient’s history and in some states is mandatory.

  • This environment could change if the downward shift of yield curve continues. Anecdotal evidence suggests that institutional investors are becoming more sensitive to changes in financial market conditions and therefore are increasingly interested in higher-return generating assets and more sophisticated styles in fund management. Indeed, the fall in the short term interest rate since last August appears to have been gradually affecting investors’ behavior. Clients’ requests for daily liquidity have decreased at the margin. ...

  • The combination of fragile, often steeply sloped terrain, low fertility, crops unsuited to the terrain, lack of external inputs, and “slash-and-burn” farming techniques results in serious and rapid soil exhaustion, erosion and sedimentation 3 [see Annex 1]. In these cases, cleared land has to be abandoned after only a few cropping seasons, triggering a need for further forest land conversion farther out on the agricultural frontier.

  • The results of the BMJ Clinical Evidence review tend to indicate that as far as antipsychotic medication goes, current drugs are of some, if limited, efficacy in many patients, and that most drugs cause side effects in most patients. Although this is a rather downbeat conclusion, this will not be too surprising to clinicians in the field, given their clinical experience and our knowledge of the pharmacology of the available antipsychotic medication.

  • It is widely accepted that a modal shift towards railways can contribute to meeting EU targets on climate protection and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. A stronger role for rail will help to achieve real progress towards the 2020 target of a 20% cut in the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions. However, concerted action must be taken by governments and policy-makers to help bring this about. The rail sector is doing its part, having already agreed on a voluntary target for 2020, to cut its 1990 levels of specifi c emissions by 30%.

  • Health scientists probably know more about the effects of ozone on human health than about any other pollutants. This is because ozone is pervasive in the environment. Also there are excellent methods of measuring ozone so the pollutant can be studied using epidemiological methods. The findings of these epidemiological studies can be verified using well-controlled laboratory studies with human volunteers and laboratory animals.

Because most S&L assets were fixed-rate home mortgages, credit-quality problems were rare. Loan evaluations were appraisal driven, and in the past the value of collateral had consistently appreciated. Thus, losses on home mortgages were rare, even in the event of foreclosure.

We have used an approach that looks at the average scores for each country, and then groups the countries according to whether or not their results are significantly different.
